660 polished case
« on: June 02, 2015, 05:04:42 pm »
Working on doing a polished case 660 did a black cased 660 a while back. Need to send it to get the upper spike hole welded but wanted to get the paint stripped and did some polishing just to see how it would turn out. Pretty happy with it so far. Not sure what to use to clean off the polish when I go to clear coat it that won't leave any residue. Was thinking alcohol or mineral spirits. Here are some pics. Do you all think I should do the recoil and the sprocket cover the same or just the case?

I'd contrast the starter cover and clutch cover.

Looks nice. Laquer thinner or mek, acetone will clean the magnesium nicely and leave metal vulnerable to oxidation.   Most clears on alum, or mag tend to dull the polish, tried this on some real mag wheel and ended up disappointed.  Not sure how you plan to use the saw?  Might try wax in lieu of clear coat as the clears won't like adhering to the polished finish..

That reminds me of the old "works" look on the motorcycle "one off" parts in the 70's and 80's. So what's a good set of numbers for a 660 jug? You building it stock or tweaked? Hope you drop pics along the way as you progress!
