More heavy bullet options in the .45/70.  More powerful 'standard loadings' (found in 'regular stores') in .444.  The regular Winchester/Federal/Remington .45/70 loads are low pressure, so that idiots don't blow up great-grandpa's trapdoor springfield with 'em.  Specialty loads from Garrett and others more closely approach the power that you can get from a strong modern .45/70 with handloads.

On a related note..............that was the reason for the .450 Marlin.  It was a factory round that basically matched .45/70 handloads that were appropriate for the modern lever guns........................with the added benefit (from a liability standpoint) that it could not be loaded (by morons) into old rifles that couldn't handle the pressure.  It's basically a 'legitimized' .458 American wildcat, but with a super thick belt so that morons couldn't load it into rifles chambered for long (but smaller caliber) belted magnums such as a .300 Weatherby (big boom would ensue).

I got a big field full of pretty nice big timber still in tree length , once I get finished pulling everything out the 661 and the 390 husky are going to be put to work for a couple long hard days of bucking up . I still got about 40,000 to 50,000 more feet to pull to this field and let the bidding wars begin on the timber

Factory loads to 100 yards the .444 is better. Wish I still had my .444.  Hand loads tip things in favor of the 45-70. Better bullet choice also for 45-70. Long range the 45-70 wins hands down. Some of the Sharps replicas are great shooters.

Deer season here starts in Sept. First two weeks bow only. Muzzle loader/crossbow starts 3rd week of Sept to middle of Dec. Rifle season last weekend Oct to Dec 6.

2 tags, rifle only and bow/ muzzle loader.
Had a single shot 45-70 years ago. Want another.

Use a chainsaw for 3 cords of wood per year now and my 241 will handle that. Still have 10 saws, but can never have enough guns.

I seen you compared the 661 stock to a 066 or 660. Want to share it here?

the 661 has more power than the 660 plain and simple , compared to my 066 I'm not sure on that but this 661 is not broken in yet so once that happens we will see , I would use the 661 to fall with in this bigger timber on these steep side hills but my ported 365 works so nice I donot want to use or carry the 661 for that job , maybe once ported I will change my mind but at this point I say no and run the 365

Nice. No heavier than a 660 but feels better balanced.

Brad said the bar oil was very thick to get out, but would think no more then a ounce left in it.
