Amazon Cylinder Kits?
« on: February 25, 2020, 10:35:38 pm »
Hello.. I am working on a stihl ms441 and was curious if anyone has any experience with the cheapo cylinder kits from amazon.. Are the worth the time do they last etc.. The kit im looking at is $45 here https://www.amazon.com/Chainsaw-Piston-Cylinder-Stihl-Standard/dp/B07HKQLPQD/ref=sr_1_3?crid=8MCEUD9YA4W9&keywords=stihl+ms441+cylinder+kit&qid=1582687651&sprefix=stihl+ms+441+cy%2Caps%2C194&sr=8-3 Appreciate any comments if anyone knows rather they are ok or just junk and a waste of time and money.

Your saw your choice, seems 50/50 on the rating in your link.
But alot of the afm 441 kits I have only heard failures on.  If it is a $50 saw to you then use a $50 kit.   But if it is a $500-$600 saw to you I would be trying to clean up the OEM cylinder and then use a better meteor or oem piston kit. JMO

If you cant clean up the oem cylinder. Then maybe this kit.  https://www.wolfcreeksawshop.com/product/meteor-cylinder-piston-kit-for-stihl-ms441-50mm-nikasil-italy-1138-020-1201/

Well its a saw pulled from our scrap pile. Missing covers sprocket etc. Im taking it upon myself to do these projects for experience and to learn how to fix our equipment so we dont have to send them off to a local dealer to fix them.. The cost will be paid for by my boss.. my uncle so im not worried about  spending but at the same time i want to be reasonable and am not going to just blow his money. But i assumed the same thing that it wouldnt be to great so i figured id ask.. there was a chance it could be a cheap option that just works but ill stick with others ive seen that  i know other technicians use for the $100-150  range. Appreciate the advice. Maybe ill try the cheap amazon option on one of our old 170's.

The last saw I did was a Stihl MS 460 and I used a after market cylinder but an OEM piston and rings.
I made sure on the cylinder that all the edges on the porting were smooth by using some fine sand paper so that It would not hang up a ring.
It turned out fine and I have done a bunch of cutting with it.
PP 505, 475, 445.

Scrape saw on the cheap. Then it is time to test things.  I've done that on my own saws with a $11 piston before.  GL
