Stihl 064 side cover
« on: February 11, 2013, 08:24:45 pm »
I was just wondering the other day what is the difference between the orginial side cover and the large side cover. Does one have an advantage over the other? Does it make a difference at all?

Not really much difference. People prefer the large side cover for both looks and being able to lay the saw on its' side when stumping. I prefer the small side cover off the 029/039/MS-290/310/390, because they're cheap and made of plastic so they take certain types of abuse better. When they break, you can recycle them.

The saws that my dad has owned and I've acquired have large side cover and he said they came like that but my stihl 064 AV came with the orginial size side cover and it was a logging saw. Weird...

Maybe your dad's saws were Western saws and yours came from the East?

I never paid much attention to this subject until recently when I noticed an 029 cover would work on my 034 super project saw .I did however know a 024 cover would work on an 038 though .Good info to know .

Watched some old videos and my dads landing saw is the 064 I have now and he bought it around here (Idaho) and it has a regular side cover but a guy he worked with also had a 064 and it had a large side cover (bought around here also). Both west coast saws bought for logging/falling with 2 different side covers...just weird I guess.
