Cheapest AM Cylinder for a MS460. Need Advice
« on: March 06, 2022, 01:32:55 am »
This is the first time I am trying out one of these cylinders. Equivalent to $.25. I decided that the piston in the pack is not adviceable to be used
Nice and shiney, but too light which indicates its not dense so chances of self destruction. And the dimensions are not too encouraging approximately 0.01mm short in diameters at the top, below the ring grooves and the skirt. I also did my version of Issac Newtons drop test. Closed the plug and decomp holes and dropped the piston 4 times into the cylinder (8.5 seconds totally). Repeated this test with an OE piston (12.5 seconds).
But I need to know what is a safe squish for this questionable cylinder. I have bolted the cylinder down with the OE piston. I got 0.8mm squish without a gasket. Add 0.3mm of the gasket which makes it 1.1mm total squish
Should I be satisfied with that or should I increase it?
The customer is insisting on a cheap repair that would give him a saw that can survive the abuse by his untrained workers, performance is the last of the priorities.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Havent seen that brand.

Lot of Folks toss the base gasket and use Threebond 1184 1194 - Red Dirko HT that stihl uses etc. That get them in .020 up range.  With gasket seen aftermarket .040 to .048 etc. Seen bigger in others.

Meteor to give you something to compare to.

The last time I did one these I used an aftermarket cylinder but an OEM piston and circlips.   I still have it and have not had any problems.
I do think though that the meteor pistons and cylinder are good to use.

Just remembered.  Have a Farmertec 460 piston and cylinder.  Never checked squish etc.

I didnt like how the 460 cylinder responded. If I didnt have a Farmertec 440 on hand too or other saws. You would never noticed it was a under performer. Yes if it was your only choice it would be fine.

But I pulled the afm 460 cylinder and stuck a OEM 046 D cc cylinder on it with the Farmertec piston. That way only 1 changed had been made to tell. It was just the stock porting numbers used in the cylinder. Saw ran like a early 046 and impressed me.

Well, I didn't use the AM piston. Used a OE instead. Initial fuel was at 20:1 for extra insurance. Adjusted the LA screw for a faster idle instead of using the intermediate Start position, didn't want to risk the  revs at start. No choke i manually primed it with an eye drop bottle of fuel.
Prayed and had a go  and, it backfired, or rather the starter handle pulled back!
Usually happens with a rebuilt engine with extra oils solvents and fuel still present.
So i increase the spark plug gap ( to avoid early ignition ) and tried again. And it started up. It was obvious that there was an initial mating problem between the cylinder and the piston. Running lean , adjusted L to correct, running rich and again adjusting L to lean it and back and for until it settled to a rich running and this time once I set L it remained steady. But no smokey exhaust. I got the smoke when I blipped the throttle, a whole lot of it. But once all the rebuild fluids were flushed out the exhaust cleared up to something like a smoke bomb ( H was at 1 1/2 and oil in fuel high)
Turned H down to 1 and left it at that .
The customer has postponed the pickup to next week and I will let him run it in for a few days at 20:1 and 1 turn on H
But I am keeping my fingers crossed because these cylinders have a bad reputation. But maybe the culprit was that piston that came in it.
The rings of the AM piston had this HY on it.

Well Joe only time will tell.   You just have to run them and find out what is going on.
