If the clutch lever snaps over center each way the spring is OK

It is too much trouble to get the spring back into place to take it out and look at it for the sake of having done it.

Sounds like you are referring to the brake band spring and not the clutch springs like the OP intended.

Clutch springs are inexpensive and easily replaced.
I just do em one at time using a pair of needle nose pliers.
