differences between 026 & 026 pro?
« on: August 15, 2012, 02:49:37 pm »
Hey guys.
New to the forum & 1st post.
Was in a saw shop yesterday looking for some Jonsered parts & the guy couldn't help me.
BUT (famous last words) he had a nice clean looking little 026.  Almost new 20"  (May be 22", can't remember) Oregon rollernose bar & 3/8 chisel chain.  Shop took it in for repair & it was never picked up so unknown history.  Price was $175.  Sounded fair & I've been thinking about a smaller saw since I'm getting older & the part of Alaska I'm in doesn't really call for 30" bars for firewood cutting so I grabbed it.  Was that a fair price?  Got it home & cut a couple of rounds of spruce about 16" in dia & it runs & cuts like a champ.
My main questions are what's the difference between the standard 026 & the pro (besides comp release), & any particular problems to watch for on these saws?  Couple of friends have Farm Boss'.  How does the 026 compare?  Is a 24" bar a little much for these saws or will they generally handle it OK?
Back in the late 70s-80s I spent a lot of time working in the woods & running 041s on landings & 045 etc bucking, but not familiar with the newer Stihl stuff.
Thanks

Welcome to the site.  8)

026 and 026 pro. I think differences is pro has adjustable oiler and de-comp.

Maybe someone else will chime in if more differences.

IMO 20" would be my max on the 026.

Me personally  would run a 16" for the cc size saw, thats just me.  My 65cc-71cc saws get the 20"

Yes that is a good deal on a running cutting 026 especially up your way with saw prices.

Thanks guys.

Cut for fun, how much difference will your muffler mod (from other thread) make on an otherwise stock 026?  How large can you go on the opening safely (need backpressure right?)?  Is the carb tuning afterwords just tweeking the h/l adjusters or rejetting?  Not looking to build a comp saw, but want the best RELIABLE performance I can get for woodcutting.  Some of the guys from our church occassionaly go on trips to cut firewood for bible camps in interior Alaska that heat primarily with wood (150+ cords a year).  We go for a week & its a several hundred mile fly in trip from the nearest "big" town, so reliability is huge.  I hate having to use their very well used saws as a backup.  Cutting spruce & birch, mostly 16" & under.  Same at home but MUCH smaller quantities!

660mag, I love decals!  Already found one  :-)  Cheapest way to go fast is decals!

Do you have a carb with adjustable H side first?    You will look at carb and see 2 side by side  H and L and then 1 I idle screw.

Yes opening up a stock 026 muffler cover helps. Just make sure you have a carb you can re-tune afterwords.

See which muffler you have on your 026. I think there was 3 covers and 2 backs. Not sure anymore.

Don't have the saw sitting in front of me but I am 99% sure it is the fully adjustable carb.  Looks like I will need to pull the muffler cover when I get a chance to see what I have.
Thanks for the pics.  I'm a visual learner  :-)
