Hello all! New Stihl Member!!!
« on: October 03, 2011, 07:56:18 pm »
New member here, just thought I would stop by the Stihl section since all of my chainsaws are Stihl (And my weed eater also!) I have been on another forum asking questions and was directed this way! Anyway I have a new 192 for trim work and the MS 361 that has been giving me the problems... (The 192 had to have a new carb put on it after 5-6 uses) Anyway the saw is at another shop this time with a Stihl certified tech, he left me a message today saying he believes it is the ignition module (coil) Even though it has plenty of spark for him he said he believes the timing isn't right in it. (I couldnt get any spark out of of it) The good thing is that he is not charging me anymore than $26 for labor!!! He said the amount of time he has in the saw it it wouldn't be worth it. He said he ruled out the carb being junk but he did say if the new coil didn't fix it I wouldn't be charged for the new carb! It sounds like my saw has run him thru the ringer!!!

What are the 361's symptoms?

What are the 361's symptoms?

I'm going to get you up to date. This stuff is from June and I am not going to state how I feel a dealer handled this. Should have been a easy fix and trouble shoot IMHO and offered to do it myself if he shipped the 361 to me. I dont want to even look at the 192, I dont care for the way those saws are put together and refuse to go inside them.

I have a Stihl MS361 that I fired up yesterday or should I say when I tried to fire it up... I replaced the plug and got it started but it is popping, banging, stalling. I can get it running for a bit then it shuts down. I can restart it right away then its the same thing again. I am just going to take it in for service to be fixed hopefully its not to expensive..... I do have a new Stihl limbing saw on order, can't remember which model but it is the same saw they use up in the trees but with a handle on the back, weighs around 7 pounds.... Hopefully it will be here soon!!

It does get used a good bit but it might sit for a month or two over the winter, gas is from last year also mixed with all stihl products. I always run super in my saws etc. I guess I should add some stabil to my cans.... I just dropped it off to have them go over it anyway, the saw has never been serviced in the 10 years I have had it. I has always been kinda hard to start the last few years when cold. So as of right now my new little saw wont be here until next week and the big saw is 10/12 days out... So now I am sawless... I am going to stop at home depot and get some wood blades for the sawzall so I can at least trim limbs off the logs in the meantime...
The guys at the service desk told me that it was probably not exhaust build up because I have always run stihl oil in the gas. He said that happens a lot using other brands with their saws.... Don't know if this is true or not???? Figured he would know....
Stihl Dino oil in ( was it the orange bottle?) has been the worst for build up on screens from what I have seen.
My gas is from last fall, if I add stabil to it now will it be ok??

I just picked it up yesterday and man is it light!! It is the MS192..
OH NO!!!!! I hope it isn't contagious........ I still haven't heard back from the dealer on mine, all I know so far is that they had to order a rubber mount and a clip for something. I hope I hear something soon though.... It has been a little cooler the last few days and I would like to get busy working on the firewood!!!!
he dealer called and said that my saw was done, $11 in parts and labor cost me a total of $110.... They said they had to completely rip the carb apart it was gummed up... I dumped all my old fuel out added the still hp super and about 1 1/2 ounces of stabil and 2 gallon of fresh 93 octane. I will pick the saw up Saturday at the dealer... I hope to have the saw back with no problems...
It has been a while since I have been on... anyway I got my saw back and fired it up last week to find out it is doing the exact same thing it was doing before.... On top of that my brand new little saw that I bought is broken also, needless to say they both went back to the dealer! The little saw just wont run and there is gas running out of the muffler. And the big saw will run for a bit and shut off. I'm starting to think the big saw has a bad coil?? I have 5 tree tops sitting in my yard and no way to cut them up!!! Good grief!!!!
Yeah I heard them fire it up the day I went to pick it up, getting it started was only a small part of the problem... It just seems like it was pinging while running and then it slowly dies off and quits... That's why I was thinking it was the coil, when it starts to warm up it quits.... The new saw (192) I just don't know what to say, it wasn't cheap and I would think I could get more than 6-7 uses out of it..... I actually ripped the skin off my hand from pulling it so many times!!! Im about to get rid of all of them and go to tractor supply and buy a store brand husky....
I'm definitely the original owner! I'll take a look at their website also...
Talked to the dealer yesterday about my saws, he said he ordered a new carb for the 192..... Makes me wander after only using it a few times what could be wrong with it?? My big saw they said they haven't found out what is wrong with it yet... So I am just thinking I will have problems with both these saws as long as I have them.... Maybe I should send Stihl a nice email.... I dont know..
Well got the saws back again, the 192 is running better than when it was new... Must have had a junk carb on it... I have not run the big saw yet, he ran almost a tank of gas thru it cutting up pallets and didn't have any problems he said?? He did say he turned the idle up little bit...

Well I tried to run the MS361 yesterday........ That's right TRIED..... After getting it back from the dealer last week and them saying they cut up bunch of pallets with it and it ran fine..... I pulled it around a 100 times yesterday, it would idle and quit, it would idle and stay running then I would give it gas and it would quit.... One time I got it half throttle for about 30 seconds and it quit.... Then one time I had it full throttle and it was barely running at idle speed...... Then I just threw it on the ground and fired up the little saw! Is it just me or what? I have had this saw since new with no problems till this year, the dealer charged me over $100 to have fixed it but every time I try to run it, it does the same thing! I am out of answers, I gave it to my buddy that works on small engines etc to take a look at it, I figured it couldn't hurt! I have been dealing with this way to long and I am working that little saw like crazy to make up for it.... Maybe I should try I new carb, new coil? I just don't know what to do....
Well im gonna do another compression check on the ms361 for a double check?? My buddy said it was at 90psi but he don't remember if the decompression was activated or not... From what I have read it should be 160-180psi if it is bad rings I might go to a big bore kit for the saw.... Has anyone ever put one of these kits on a saw?
It didn't look bad when I had the muffler off, the carb I was just trying to adjust it to get it to run... I did have a bunch of chain oil leak in my truck bed though... I will probably try and get it going myself, I can't learn unless I try and it looks like I have some good support here.... but at least I know of a good back up plan!! I did watch a video on YOUTUBE of a coil being bad on the 361..
Well I did a compression check on the ms361 today. It came in cold around 120psi which from what I understand is way to low. From what I could find on the internet it should be around 150-180psi. It seems to me that the dealer should have checked the compression. Now I am considering a new piston and rings or the big bore kit with new cylinder. I guess it all depends on what the cylinder looks like maybe just some new rings? I guess I can start there....???? Any input anyone??
I did order a plug to replace the decompression valve. I also went and bought a compression guage of my own. I figured I would start with the cheap small stuff and go from there... A guy I work with said it might be another piece of dirt in the carb?? I'm just going to try the plug 1st and see what happens. I don't know anything about the fuel lines and impulse lines??
I removed the decompression plug today but before I did I checked it with the new gauge, it was reading around 160-170psi and I checked it after the plug was installed and it was the same... I then tried to start the saw and couldn't get it to fire, I checked for spark and had none. My buddy checked it before and said it had spark, I tried multiple times and couldn't get a spark. I am going to try and find a coil local tomorrow but I don't think I am going to have any luck... Also I need to know how to readjust the carb so I don't lean it out and cause more problems provided I get it running again???
I am going to check that wire also, the saw sits on my damp gravel garage floor and it wont start or acts funny. I left it on my porch over night and just tried to start it and it did try to fire. Have no idea how to ohm out the wire to check it? Also wouldn't the saw have to be able to run to check that?
I found my meter now what do I do? Not even sure where the ohm is on it? Is that the upside down horse shoe looking thing?
I just check everything on the saw, the wire keeps coming back at "0.00" when I touch the one end by the switch to the other end by the coil. Does this mean that it probably is the coil?
I believe when it was off it was reading some numbers. I have the saw back together now, I will have to try that tomorrow. I am hoping they can test the coil at the dealer tomorrow... At this point I think I will order a new coil just to rule that out... What is the difference with an OEM coil and the aftermarket from Baileys? The OEM IS ATONE $44.00 The one at Baileys was on sale for $60...
Hey I had another question??? I removed the spark screen from the muffler the other day and it was clean. I was just wanting to know if I need to leave it in the saw would there be any difference not having it in the muffler etc.?

There that was taken from 10 pages of just his questions.

Hey everyone, talked to the other certified dealer the other day. He is convinced that it is the module/coil, he said he is getting good spark but he believes the timing is out. The good news is everything else checked out really good and he is only going to charge me a flat rate of $25-$26 plus the part which is like $43-$44 bucks. He is going to put it together on Monday. He also said if that wasn't it the new carb would be on him!!!! I believe that is service, so we will see how it goes... Now I believe their is a difference between having a Stihl Certified Technician and just some ol mechanic in the back room at the tractor dealer working on saws! I will have my fingers crossed that it s going to be ok.... He was going to come in on his day off and told him no, because I wouldn't want to come in on my day off! He shook my hand and said thank you and said I will be taking care of you!!!!

Interesting read on stihl coils.

(A while ago I posted a problem with a MS280 ignition problem and later a starting problem with a FS100 which again turned out to be the electronic ignition unit. Measuring both units with a DVM on the LT side they both gave a reading of +2M ohms both ways, whereas the new units gave a reading of say +6Kohms, so any unit that give a 2 meg ohm reading is faulty. Both units are 10 yrs old with light use, I'm not moaning about Stihl products but it may help with anybody with a similar fault to check the low tension side of the ignition units, both units are slightly different so I couldn't swap to test.

The symptoms were similar the MS280 kept cutting out or would run for a while then cut, suggesting a blocked carb but then it ran for 30 sec and died - no spark. The brush cutter was a sod to start but ran ok but still had a weak spark, so again I thought it was a carb problem.

Both units are now starting first time and running well)
