High Performance Air Filter for Stihl Pro Saws
« on: January 09, 2012, 06:37:36 pm »
I've been reading this forum and there seems to be a lot of knowledge about saw performance.  We manufacture a really good aftermarket high performance air filter for Stihl saws, and when I searched the forum I didn't see any awareness of our MaxFlow kits.  So I thought I'd post about our filter and answer any questions you may have."

We have been making these kits for almost 20 years, they came about when I was working in the woods and got tired of clogged filters with no way to field clean them. Green weenies were available for some saws, but nothing for Stihl, so I developed the foam element replacement kit for the HD filter.  They flow much more air, and if you have a ported saw or a ported muffler, you need this air filter.  On a stock saw they are USFS approved.
Love hot saws, used to run one myself 20 years ago.

Welcome to the site and sharing info. I have only seen these once before on a friends saw and have no experience with them.

I have only heard of the green weenie filter from guys out west. Any more info on these?

What other makes of saws do you have filters for?

Thanks for letting me talk about the product.  I notice there is a hot saw section as well, do  need to post separately there or do most Stihl guys visit both places?
For example I notice cut4fun had a woods mod 084 and it looked like it had a stock filter.  I can tell you with 100% certainty that our filter will far outperform the stocker on that saw.  We did considerable flow bench testing and the 084 was our test mule.  Even smaller cube saws with a pipe will out breathe what the stock filter can flow.
I think green weenies are still available, but my experience was that since they hang out of the saw they get torn up really fast.  We make a brush/rain cover for all our kits to protect the foam.  Also Forest Service approval was really a big deal and these and the factory filters are the only ones that have been approved.  One thing I did like about green weenies was that they were a one piece filter, no glued seams.  Our filter elements are all one piece for durability.  On motorcycles and cars a clued seam is ok because they are 4 strokes and there is no spitback.  But chainsaws have a lot of spitback and glued seams just fall apart.  Especially if you wash the filter element in saw gas, as many do.
Unfortunately we only make MaxFlow filters for the StihlŽ Pro saws, MS440, MS460, MS660Mag MS880, 044, 046, 064, 066 and 084. Years ago we looked into building them for Huskys, but the tooling was different for every saw and the tooling costs back then were so high.  Now tooling costs have dropped a bit, but the testing to get them approved by the USFS is too big of a burden.  Hopefully Stihl saws keep a similar air filter so we can keep supplying them.  For example the 441 was so different that we didn't build one for that, and now that the MS440 is back I'm glad we didn't.
Hotshot crews all over the USA use them and there is a surprisingly big following in the South as well.  They are also utilized in cold conditions because they don't freeze up as much the stock set-up.
I forgot to mention that we primarily sell through dealers and repair shops we do offer a discount to qualified ones.

Good point but to be specific  most hot saws are ran without a filter or at least a lot of them . ;)

My piped 084 gas racesaw didnt use a filter being it was only 2 3 cut racing.

The 2 woods ported 084 used stock HD filters (maybe 1 used the stock flat older style) and I also had the green winter filter for more flow if filter was required at a GTG race.
If no filters were required at a racing event for the 2 3 cuts made no filter was used.
