Hot start problem Stihl 056 AV
« on: June 06, 2016, 09:38:00 am »
I have a 056 AV that starts and runs strong until I shut it off.  It will not start again until it has cooled off.  I believe it to be a fuel problem, since after pulling for a while and even choking the warm engine the spark plug is completely dry when removed. The fuel tank vent is not at fault- I have loosened the cap to make sure sure there is not a vacuum lock.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar with your experience level as one never knows about the other on the Internet.

But . . . Just in case, A warm start must be attempted with the carb on high idle.

I do have the throttle locked on the start position.  Don't even get a cough out of it, which seems strange since it starts and runs so well before being shut off.  Thanks for your response.

I always check to see if I have spark . . . Just in case

Then if the plug is dry - I squirt a little fuel mix in the carburetor and try it?

Before you go too far, check the integrity of the fuel line and impulse lines. I draw a vacuum on them.

I at some point if it fails to start is to replace or back flush the fuel filter.

Old saws have a habit of the area between the carburetor regulator diaphragm and the steel cover plate being packed with sawdust.

I did replace the fuel filter- forgot to mention that.  I'll try drawing vacuum on the fuel and impulse lines and see where that leads.  Thanks for your help.

An 056 AV could have a bad coil, when it gets hot it stops working, those coils are known to fail.

Check if you have spark when it won't start.

That makes sense, since the saw doesn't even cough.  I'll check that next.  Thanks for your help.

It might not be a bad idea before you shut down the saw to give it a cool down run .Out of the cut rev it about 1/4 throttle for about 20 -30 seconds .This allows the fan air blast to cool down the coil .

What happens is the solid state components of the ignition systems can temporarily  fail under high heat conditions.I found this out on McCulloch saws with solid state ignitions .
