mako piston/cylinder for stihl 036
« on: January 04, 2012, 12:46:57 pm »
i'll let the pictures speak for themselves ;)
ordered this topend from the local stihl (yep stihl) dealer. total cost was just a hair over $200. the oem was almost $400+tax for the same parts.
the saw is an old 56cc 034 i have had around since the late '90's. has had alot of wood put past it and has been apart so many times it's funny. so it's the perfect test bed for any of these cheap parts i like trying to make my own opinion about. this mako topend? for just the visual quality, thumbs down.
the piston is crude, plain and simple. but the machining is good enough for the 'put it together and just run it' crowd. (as i am doing with this topend).

the wrist pin is a little too easy to insert, so i used the original. you will need to use the supplied clips as the new pistons grooves are too big for the stockers. new one on the right.

the cylinder leaves alot to be desired in the quality department. it has big castings, rough transfers and crude porting. notice the exhaust port. total rectangle with no room for useful improvment. may be a ring catcher, but we'll see :D

notice no ring support in the intake:

notice the combustion chamber? how do you let it get packaged up like that? crude crude crude >:(

not a great pic but the 'white' area is extremly rough. like gravel road rough.

the rings look like the split ductile units supplied with the nwp units. nothing special.

how does it run? it runs o.k.. nothing to write home about and the compression is abit over 145 psi. it started out with 135psi. ::) the squish clearence is just a touch over 40thou. you can't shave much off the bottom of the cylinder, you'll free port.
we'll see how it holds up with regular cutting duties and abuse. i have it tuned a bit fat at 12500.

you need to cut some of the top covers reinforcment out.

you also nee to cut half the rubber bumper to fit past the fin on the cylinder.

crap! i thought it wasshown in this pic ;D you get the idea ;D

i'll be sticking to the kits that bailey's supplies. they are by far the best ones out there right now. i wanted to try one of these mako kits out as i have heard pretty good things about them. guess the people who have bought them and thought they were pretty good need to have their eyes examined. or buy other kits to compare them too. :) maybe i just got one of the 'made on friday' kits ;)

OOOOOH YEAH! the 034 gotsed a new airfilter too 8) it's been getting more and more balled overtime, figured it's time for less dust injection ;)
yon olde:

hither new:

i would've showed you how nice the cylinder was and the lack of any scratches and polishing it had. but when kristian returned it. it looked like a thissss:

this is what happens when a fuel line goes bad, the person is mostly deaf and has almost no feeling in his hands.
he felt awful about it. wanted to just buy the saw from me or atleast pay to have all the parts replaced plus my time. his saw (034 super) was at my place getting a new line (coincidence?) and a carb rebuild. scared him when i said i was keeping his saw (it's freaking mint and runs fantastic). i told him i should have cought the problem as i was the last person to run the saw 3 or 4 months ago, seemed o.k. then but it's a long wait for a saw. and i even gave the saw a look over and run before it went out the door. ::) not his fault in my head. he wouldn't run a saw he thought wasn't running properly. he said it didn't give any indication of any problem while running, just when he filled it up and gave it a tug. said it felt a little soft on the pull cord......
i ain't charging him anything. this guy is a top notch borrower, will always step up if something is his fault (even when not), and i'll happily lend him another saw if needed.
i've had the saw since '94-'95 or so, came to me in a box with a toasted topend after a 'contractor' tried to run just one tank of straight fuel to get one last cut out of it for the day. it looked almost like new then... the saw, not the piston ;D
if this piston/cylinder doesn't work out, i'll probably order the bailey's nwp kit to try. :)

i've dealt with them before and they are pretty good :). problem is (for some reason) it takes quite a bit longer for their stuff to get here. almost 2 months compared to bailey's 1 month. may not be their fault, could be customs and canadapost farting around. :o

well, it seems the quality of their product is reflected in their customer service. ::)

"we're sorry to hear you're not happy with the quality of our cylinders. we appreciate your feedback and will look into
your comments.
mako products are now sold in 37 countries with incredible success, this is why we are suprised by your comments but appreciate them
at the same time.
as for the price, we believe mako products are the most competatively priced products on the market, but we cannot control the retail price our customers set.
thanks for the feedback, and sorry the product didn't meet your satisfaction".
adam.

so, when a customer sends you pictures of an obvious problem with quality control, you send them an ad vert as a response? nice going jakmax. i've had better dealings with suppliers out of china. better quality also. :o
if anybody wants to see the full email i sent, just pm me. i have no idea how to post it here. :)
