meteor big bore kit for 440 magnun
« on: November 04, 2013, 11:49:58 pm »
Hi to all I'm thinking about a swap to a big bore 52mm kit. The meteor brand was the way I was thinking.
I'm wondering has anyone done the swap and what brand and results they have.
I just rebuilt a 440 with new seals and rings the compression was around 120 before and now is only 130.
I just checked and the CR is bad I used soap bubbles. I didn't do a lite hone on the cylinder before the new rings.
I run only one tank of fuel so far, would the rings still seat if I pulled the cylinder again and did a lite hone?  ???
Thanks for any advise
Randy

Throw your hone away. You don't want to stick it into a plated cylinder.

Just run the 440, it is not finished improving yet.

That's what I thought to I know the rings have to have time to seat.
All time I changed rings I just used the wife's green scratchy pad to clean the cylinder.
I'll get a new CR and probably a new compression gauge.
I built the saw to make log benches and run a 32" full chisel skip tooth chain.
On the first tank of fuel the saw had good power and sliced right through a 30" pine slab.
oodles of noodles to say. To me nothing better than a saw with a long bar buried in the wood.
So the reason for the big bore setup is that if the 50mm can't handle the job maybe the new cylinder and 52mm can.

The Meteor cylinders have worked well.

To get a big bore, you may have to go HiWay?

I would say somewhere around 5 tanks of fuel the rings should be seated or almost there. Unless you port or play with the squish you will not notice that much of a difference from the stock kit to the big bore kit. IMO.

I have a 52mm "Big Bore" from Meteor. The flywheel side of the cylinder needs clearanced and the holes for the cylinder bolts need to be ground away a little so the 4 bolts from the 044/440 will fit the 046/460 pattern.

Terry Landrum tickled the cylinder for me, but I have yet to install it. I started setting it up, but I decided to port my 044 (I figured I had Terrys kit, so I had nothing to loose, so I went for it) and love the way it runs. The big bore kit is up next.

IIRC Meteor doesn't make any big bore kits. It just so happens that a 460 (52mm) kit will work on a 440 with the changes mentioned in the previous post.

Did you use a no name piston or something like that in it? I see no reason to go to a big bore when a port job would get you more than a swap to a big bore would. An OEM 460 cylinder would be a better choice than the big bore. Most new rings and pistons take about 2-3 gallons to break in good.

The piston is oem that was in good shape, no lines de carbon skirt look good, no flat spots.
Installed a new set of caber rings. Here's the link for the piston and cylinder kits I was looking at.

This saw will not cut firewood it's only purpose is to make my log benches.
I know I won't see a dramatic change in power with the 52mm just thinking maybe a little more torque
when the 32" bar  is fully buried in the wood. I did put a new dual port muffler on it to.

stick with the stock topend. it will make more power everywhere compared to an aftermarket kit regardless of the bigger bore. i'd check your compression tester before coming to the conclusion your comp is low.
another thing to look at is the thickness of the cylinder gasket. too thick will lower the compression.
the 440 after a muffler mod is a smoking strong saw. no need to ruin it with questionable parts. it's worth putting oem on it. and there isn't any reason to question the quality.

another thing to also look at is the piston. it might look fine, but it may very well be out of spec. and letting some comp pass by regardless of rings. if you can't see the 'machine' marks, it's probably time to replace it. these saws like to fit snug.
when I grow up, i wanna be an adult.
