MS-180 Starter
« on: October 27, 2014, 11:01:30 am »
Have to replace the starter rope on an MS-180. Never worked on a MS-180. Anything I should know?

You have to take the gas and oil caps off and top cover helps.
Also you have tilt it in top first when reinstalling it, otherwise just a normal starter

Sounds like changing the starter on a MS-250.

On the 025/MS250, there is a air baffle that goes up under the top cover. To remove the cover, involves removing the right top buffer.

You have to literally force the starter out and in when trying to get the baffle under the top cover while aligning everything else about the starter cover.

The chain saw is easy enough to take apart if you do it in the correct order and it also is easy enough to assemble if you do it in the right order.

But to replace the starter cover or coil on a complete chainsaw is a pain. Even to replace the fuel line or impulse line requires you to drop the tank and undo most of the buffers. The coil replacement is real difficult on a complete saw and most people put the wires in the wrong place when they put the new coil in.

If you work on the clamshell Stihls regularly, you learn the ropes and they're not too bad.

I guess I'm spoiled by Dolmars and Husqvarnas.

Easy Start set up is a little more involved than standard single spring stihl starter

Well it is done, took about 15 minutes because of members help! I don't normally work on homeowner saws least of all Stihls. ::) I'm with Adam, Dolmar or HVA!
