I think a used Stihl is in my future.
« on: October 01, 2013, 06:35:44 pm »
Well, been lurking here, and learning.  and learning.   And... yep, you guessed it, learning.   I thing between the 2 major brands that are locally available via established dealers, that I probably couldn't go wrong with either one, but it seems that there are just a lot more Stihls out there and my chances of getting a decent saw for my needs will be greater.

So I see people like Ohio Andy, and Cut4fun, who appear to be in Ohio, and who seem to run into saws out there in the wild.   I live up in Lorain County and am looking for a Stihl to start out with.  Anyone care to point me in the in the right direction?

We have been heating our house with a freestanding woodstove since we moved in 7 years ago, and I have been using an Echo cs-440 with an 18 inch bar.   Not a bad saw, but I have been cutting more and more, and it is starting to not meet my needs.   for example, I just bought a load of logs, and I am having a heck of a time keeping this little saw on task.  It has served me well, and if I replace it, I intend to let my son gain more sawing experience with it, and keep it as a backup saw until I could smuggle in ANOTHER good saw.

Not really looking for a monster with a 36 inch bar, so what should I be considering?   I know that opinions will vary, but I will be considering all suggestions, since I am pretty certain that ALL of you here have more experience than I do.    So thanks.

Welcome

I've seen very nice stihl 440 up your way for $200 not long ago. Just to far to drive for me. If local I would have snagged it and flipped for $400.  I think Ohioandy did get that one.

Firewood saw in stihl depending on size wood.  026 260 maybe for smaller stuff.  I like 036 360 62cc, 361 59cc, 044 440 71cc.   Husky  depending on side wood. 346 50cc , 357 359 , 362 365 371 372.  All metal cased saws. Plastic cased would do too, I just prefer the better built ones.

Look at some bigger older echo in metal cased too.  echo 5000 50cc, 6700 670 67cc.

Thanks for the Welcome and quick reply Cut4fun.    Did you see the Stihl 440 on craigslist or is there another place you keep your eye on?   And thanks for the heads up on some saw models.  I don't have the experience between metal and plastic saws, but I think that I am just inclined to want something built more solid than not.   Mass is mass.
How common were those older echos?  Is there really a chance I might run across one?    Is OhioAndy closer up my way, then?

Do you have a shop, or do you mostly tinker (and I mean NO disrespect by the term tinker.)  I hope to get to where every post isn't filled with Questions, I hope you are a patient man.     Stay safe.

Yes CL. There was one for $400 a week ago. You need it looked over just holler.

Ohioandy is up your way to the east I think.

Yeah echos are out there. I watch cl's. Even have some kind of download to scan more then one area.

I have a echo 6700 here you can try now. No 5000 but 5cc smaller 4500. I even got a bigger 8000 80cc you could try.  Smaller trim saw in a echo 3900 39cc clamshell to try.

I do it as a side hobby to my real job, after quitting racing chainsaws in 2010.  Took what I learned and put it out there to help others.

Check for sale board  here. There was some  rebuilt 372 200-250 and maybe a 365 = might be gone now.

Do you currently have that 084 up for sale on CL?  the magnetic toolholder above the workbench looks familiar.   Racing chainsaws?  that's a new one for me.   saw a guy take a snowmobile on the 1/4 mile track at Norwalk raceway (now Summit raceway), but it didn't look all that fast to me.
If that was an offer to come check out some saws and learn something, well, we will have to work out when.  Never did mind a drive.  That should only be about an hour and a half or so.  I get down to fin feather and fur every 6 weeks or so anyway.
and I will look at the for sales here.   Not committed to any brand at this point.      Thanks again.

Yes and Yes.  You can test out saws with different set ups also.  Just have to hook up sometime.

I'm not married to any chainsaw and all can be bought for the right price.

Alright. Got a little braver yesterday, take this in context, I don't have much experience with the insides of internal combustion engines.  Cut4fun, I found some links you posted that showed pictures of prisons that had been run rich, and ones that had been run lean.   My understanding is that I have just run it FAR too lean, based on the fact that it is really set on the lean side from the factory, then more lean because of ethanol blend, and who knows what else.     So I took off my muffler and sure enough, piston is scored.
We are talking about my Echo cs-440 (not the evl version).   The last two times I ran it, it got very hot within 4 minutes and wouldn't stay idling after a couple cuts, it would just die.   So I proceded to check my dedicated two stroke gas can and my gas looks like jack Daniel's.  I then pored it into a glass jar, and there was a bit of water in it also.
So I checked my saw's tank and there was some emulsified water in the fuel.

Dumped that out, went and found some ethanol-free gas and made up some new pre-mix.   This has the right color, and when I put it in the saw, it ran and idled.   I cut about a dozen chunks of wood with it, and it continued to idle fine after some minor idle adjustment.
Rebuild kit for the top end is still over $200, and I know I am living on borrowed time at this point so I am just gonna go
with a bigger used saw for now and worry about that echo later down the road.
Cut4fun,  I am not asking for a quote or to lock you down, but ROUGHLY, what should I be thinking about spending on a good used saw in the size range we are talking about?   And I thank you for your help so far.   Am looking forward to meeting you and trying out some saws.
