MS 361 not firing
« on: November 28, 2012, 03:33:43 pm »
I have a MS 361 that's about 5 yrs old.  It's been sitting for a couple of months since last used.  Won't fire.  Doesn't seem to be getting any fuel.   In the lower to mid 20's here, filled the fuel tank with fresh mix, pulled spark plug, put a shot of fuel in, and it fired, but only ran until shot of fuel burned, so have spark.  Any suggestions on what to do next?

I would be checking the fuel line for hair line cracks that wont allow it to draw fuel.  Impulse line for same.  Look to make sure fuel filter is still attached to fuel line.

Then I would look at carb adjustments and then go inside carb to look at diaphragms.

Maybe a sticking inlet needle in carb?

Will check the fuel line for cracks...  What is the impulse line?  Is the fuel filter you're referring to the one at the end of the line in the fuel tank?

Yes. Make sure filter is clean and you can suck air through it with it off line.  You will know if it is attached then.

Impulse line  looks like this. Needs to be in good shape too.

Stihl 361 workshop manual aka service manual will be coming in a PM for your saw so you can see things and where they are at.  Plus troubleshooting. Hint print it out and save.

Filter is clean and air moves through it easily.  I suspect that the impulse line attaches to the carb and goes into the tank to the filter.  The one I have looks different than the pic you sent, and is ribbed, and is probably **** somewhere and I will try and find a replacement.  Can you recommend a good on-line site for parts?  Also took apart the carb - no gunk, gel or debris noticed.

ribbed is your oem fuel line.

impulse line will go to the cylinder or crankcase. I cant remember on a 361. Then to carb or intake area, again I cant remember on 361.

The guy in Washington State is about 15 minutes away from me and I have used him many times if I didn't have the part I needed

I have no completes about using his parts

Really appreciate your help!  Thanks for those parts links and recommendations - will probably come in handy in the future.

Low and behold, our small local saw shop had the right fuel line, because the old one was ****!  Looking closely at the impulse line, I saw nothing wrong, so didn't change it out.  Saved a bit of time.  Put it all back together, fresh gas, new plug, and away she did run!

Firewood time.  Do it this time of year - easier access to trees using a snow machine.
