Thanks for posting. That should come in handy one day. I knew of the oversized studs for the plastic cased saws. Never knew there was one for mag case saws.

My Chainsaw Repair group has over 11,000 members now. Just branched it off of this place not long ago as the websites seem so old school for the millennials today.   Updated Sept 2019 with ovr 38,000 members now.

There are so many stihl techs there and a few of them are moderators.  They share bits and pieces of stuff and it gets lost quickly there. So If I catch it I try and save the good stuff here so not to get lost.  ;)

@joe_indi  info you shared on the chainsaw repair group earlier. Making sure to save that type of stuff here to find easier later.

I had tried all kinds of fixes for the stripped thread on the crankcase for the 8mm studs on Stihl saws, especially the countless 460s and 461s that are in use here.

But all of them were cumbersome fixes, time consuming and could cause disasters on the crankcase.

That is, until I read a Stihl technical information on an oversize stud for the 29/39 saws.

Self threading 9mm studs on the side that goes into the body. 8mm on the outside.

But these were intended for the non metal housings of the 29/39/290/390 saws. They also had wider collars unsuitable for the use I had in mind.

Anyway in 2001 I got myself a pack of 10 of these oversize studs. Got a friendly tooling shop to reshape them on the lathe. And they worked like a dream!

And I have been using this fix ever since. Time for the fix is just 10 minutes or less.

Havent found a updated stihl oversize bar stud for the newer stihl ones yet.

Having to help a guy on CRG to come up with a redneck fix.

2 ways we thought of here is first one and working.

The newer style clutch covers are different too, so the old bar stud ones dont fit right.  Fix for that.

Silver new style standard and gold old style oversize

The tapered base on the stud could be a curse than a blessing. They limit the cover from going down beyond a point when things get worn. So I replace the new versions with the old type studs which allow the cover to go right down and hold the bar in place.
