MS180C doesn't oil
« on: March 08, 2014, 12:59:29 pm »
I have an MS180C and I cannot get it to oil the chain. I have never worked on an oiler issue with a Stihl. I have got it apart and am looking at the part that appears to spin the oiler(photo attached). I'm thinking that this part that mesh's with the oiler may be worn. I can slip this on and off of the shaft without spinning it. I took a pic of the part that I think is the culprit.

The main oiling issues with the 170/180 are;
bad oil lines, they shrink from heat and age sucking air at the nipple.
the pumps themselves, replace with 250 pump.
spring arm not in the clutch drum slot.

The part you have in your hand is not tight to the shaft. It runs off of the drum, not crankshaft.

If you remove the black wrap handle, you can access the oil pump/line at the bottom, and clean it out, the holes in the oiler are tiny and clog easily.

Thanks for the help….However, I am not understanding how to remove the handles. Are the black rubber grommets just pressed in? Not sure what holds them in.  I must be a rookie with the Stihl equipment.

a little butter, and some massage, then those mounts will be like putty in your hands.  You have to pluck out the caps/plugs first......

OK, I have the handle off, however I did destroy 2 of the rubber mounts. I also cleaned the oil line. In my opinion it did not appear to be clogged. Now, do I replace the oil pump and if so, how do I get at it.  I just don't want to put it together and not have it work. It appears that I will have to remove the jug from the case????? Like I said before, I am new to Stihl repair. I also am concerned how to remove the rest of the rubber mounts and also how to reinstall them.
Can I order parts online or do I need to go to a dealer. Any repair instructions and parts list will be appreciated. Thanks again for all the help. These sites are great.

You do not need to remove the engine to remove the oil pump it is thread in the end you took you screw out of. You will have to use that screw and apply even pressure with two screwdrivers and the pump will slide out of the housing.

The screw size is M5-.80 thread pitch make sure you watch the depth it is down in the case and make sure you line up the hole in the housing and the hole in the pump.
