ms250 oiler upgrade
« on: January 22, 2015, 07:01:25 pm »
Hi Guys,       I can't seem to keep my chain lubed. My chain is sharp, bar clean(oil flowpath open),16" Sthil Rollamatic, running WO in the cut, the bar is seated tight against the case. I've tried different bar oils. Can't think of anything else to try. I'm burning more gas running out of the cut trying to get lubed, than actually cutting. I'm wanting  to put the higher volume oil pump on my ms250, but realized the manual says to use the oil pump install tool,(an 88 buck tool?) to seat the new pump correctly. Has anyone changed the pump on this model w/out Stihl's overpriced tool? I guess if that tool is necessary, I'll scrap that idea and maybe drop my final drive pulley from a 7 tooth to a 6 tooth (slower chain with same oil flow, Would that help any?) What do you guys think? Any help would be appreciated.

If you have the repair manual, there's probably no reason why you cannot run a screw into the pump and pry it out with a screw driver?

Likewise to drive the new one in with a soft hammer on a screw?

I would follow the repair manual for the depth.

My experience with these is that the scroll gear on the crankshaft typically uses little more than one thread on the crankshaft gear to turn the pump. To look at the crankshaft gear, it will look like the teeth are all OK but you need to look closely at one short section of the last thread on the gear in the rear.

There's no high output oiler for the 250's.
I ran into a chainsaw carver last summer who was having oiling issues with all of his 6+ MS250s.
I pulled all of his oil pumps and the groove in them was all packed with wood chips.

And I drilled out the holes into the pump a little also. Just food for thought

You have to remove the black wrap handle before you pull the pump it is possible to do with just a screw and a
screw driver but not easy.

Thanks for the response guys. I havn't been able to find specs on the seating depth when installing the new pump. my manual shows (indicates) the Stihl tool is designed to seat it at the correct depth. I'm wondering if I could measure the depth of the old pump before removing it, then install the new one to match. Any thoughts on that or any other ideas would be very helpful.  The part # on the new pump is #11236403201. I,ve been led to believe that it is set up to provide more oil when running a longer bar and chain. I believe that the stock pump is the same used on the ms210 and ms230 to pump oil onto a 12" or 14" bar. Again, thanks in advance for any help.

Here is a pic of the manual.  I would suggest scribing the old pump flush with the case, and putting the same mark on your new pump.

And, yes the oil pump upgrade went smoothly, thanks to you're coaching. It's just my thanks has been slow in the saying. Been too busy cutting! And that's a good problem to have!!  ;D
