ms250 questions
« on: January 20, 2014, 01:33:54 pm »
got one from the metal recycling yard. has fire and compression. needs a new sprocket and is missing the sprocket cover, bar, and chain.
1. should i switch it over to 3/8?
2. not sure if it was the self adjusting chain tension type or not. what should i look for? only has the front bar stud. the rear one appears like it may have been broken off or, if i'm reading the repair manual correctly, it could possibly be part of a self adjusting setup.  if it is self adjusting other than the sprocket cover what would it take to convert to a manual adjustor?
3. are the studs simply a screw-in type? i assume a left hand thread.

also, since i really haven't gotten to play with this thing yet i'm not ready to start buying parts yet but if i can get it to fire off and run i will be looking for the aforementioned parts.
just doing my up front work right now.
thanks for any help.
jerry

.325 is the best setup on these. I use the yellow label Stihl RS chain .063 gauge. I sometimes use the Stihl yellow label semi chisel chain too.

Your saw a "C" version and IIRC, they cannot be made into a regular one.

The clutch-side half of the crank case is different for the "C" version.  There isn't room under the bar stud in that milled slot for the chain tensioner mechanism that the standard saw takes.

I wasted a bunch of time trying it on a 270C.  If you look REALLY closely at the IPL you'll see it.   It's not obvious, though.  That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.   ::)

Actually, the hand adjuster is not that bad.  I revolted at the thought of it.  But, it is actually pretty easy to use.  Trick is that it's easy to get lazy and not rotate the bar because the big gear has to be removed.  It's just a hand screw.  When I bought the saw the previous guy had never rotated the bar.  That  bar was hammered on the bottom.

The standard chain adjust will have the adjustment screw in the case. The tooless chain adjustment features are mostly mounted in the clutch cover and on the bar.

I have a bunch of NOS OEM clutch covers and .325 spur sprockets for those saws, along with some reconditioned chains.

There's no reason the "C" setup would not last a experienced mechanical person a long time. They just don't work well for idiots.

I would never go out and buy a new one but if I got roped into one in a trade deal, there's no reason I wouldn't use it.

If you switch it over to 3/8, it will have to be 3/8 lo/pro.

If you go with 3/8 low profile chain, the Stihl PS chain is the best

Have you tried the Oregon 91vxl  They made a longer cutter to mimic the Carlton's longer cutter?
