ms270 ignition coil alternative
« on: May 05, 2017, 12:41:15 pm »
Hello to everyone, New to group and have a question. Is there an alternative for a ms270 coil, maybe something close that I can make work. The last new coil was $76, lasted less than 1/2 tank gas and I won't buy another. I also ask this on another group but may not have been the right group for such a question. Thanks DPJ

Stihl 270 and 280 use the same coil?   If saw was bought new, dont stihl cover coils for life of original owner?

Sure it's your coil and not the flywheel magnets not pulling?

I didn't buy it new but I wasn't ask that when they billed me the coil. The magnets seem strong. When I got it the coil was completely dead, this new coil will fire for 3 maybe 5 minutes then no fire at all till it cools for an hour or so, then same thing again.  I will call and see what they say. They're a stihl dealer on ever corner here, all owned by the same person and service is a joke.

Just on my quick search the coils are very common to go on these it seems = 270 280 saws.

If your not original owner I would say your hit on original coil. But since you bought new oem coil I would think the new coil would have some kind of warrenty?

I may have been to quick to bad mouth, I called and the guy remembered me buying it and is going to talk to his manager and may call Stihl so maybe they will make it up. I thought I read somewhere that someone fitted another type coil to a 270, adapter plate or something. If so it would be good to know.

I did get a new replacement coil but not from  stihl, man at the hardware spoke to his elders and the store made it good. Doesn't say much for stihl but says a lot for the store, will buy from more often, good people. DPJones

Just read this. Thought it deserved a repost to warn others of buying them used market etc.

NEVER buy an MS270 or MS280, both are total crap, worst saw models by a major brand in the last decade.
The ignition coil is OEM only and $100+ and are super prone to failure.
The dealer will not fix one as Stihl wants them out of circulation, they have a ton of problems.
Also most of the parts are unique to these two models so they are all OEM only and expensive and scarce and there will be no aftermarket parts coming down the road for them, as Stihl pulled the models from shelves quickly when all the problems became apparent.

I thought they made the 270, 280, 271 and 281. The store I bought the coil from made it good, not stihl but the store, the first I paid for, it was $71. I have a few stihl and other saws and it's probably the smoothest one of all and faster than my 026. The coil was the only problem I knew of. I took this one completely apart when I got it to clean and see what I had, it was missing the covers too, it's certainly unlike all the other Stihls I got.

My opinion is Stihl came up with a new saw design, had electrical problems and said the heck with it AND the people that bought them.

Run one if you get a chance, just don't buy.

Here's the exaust hole, can't tell by the picture but it's a tiny bit bigger than a pencil eraser. Inside may be full of stuff too.

Strange that with it's design no other coil will fit and the coil is the problem, allmost like it was planned

If it was another color and no names or numbers on it I wouldn't think Stihl had anything to do with making it.
