Hi I have a Stihl 009, Today I took all the saw's out and fired them up, Haven't run a few of them in a month or so, Well They all fired right up but I noticed a little spark coming from the boot of the 009 and sure enough the metal spring was sticking out of it, the saw ran like a champ, I have a new one coming along with the spring.

I see that if I wanted to replace the whole wire I would have to replace the whole coil. Is there any tricks to getting it back on? Does the spring poke though the side of the plug wire? Do I need to tape or do anything to it? is it obvious which way the spring goes into the boot? Thanks

There is a straight section of wire that extends from the coiled section of wire that connects to the spark plug. At the end of the straight section of wire there is a sharpened 3/16" right angled bend. Stick the spark plug wire end against the coiled section of the wire connector. You then press the sharp 3/16" sharpened  section into the wire. There will be a hole already in the wire. The straight section of the wire should fit snugly against the insulation spark plug wire with the coil portion at the very end. You can then slip the boot back on, until you see the coil in the spark plug opening of the boot. Sometimes a little spit on the inside of the rubber boot makes it easier to slip on.

All of these years working on Snowmobiles and quads and dirt bikes, I Always just replaced the wire, never messed with just changing the boot. Is there anything I should do to keep it from coming off? I know when I made ones for cars I crimped them.

Your old boot may have become softened or damaged?

Chain saw plug wires are 5mm and cars are often 8mm.

Any chainsaw full service dealer should have a new boot?

Stihl 009 010 011 workshop manual service manual

Go to ignition system for how to replace boot etc .
You wont need to do this but it is all there.  It even says says the wire lead unscrews. Slide the plastic cap covering coil and lead going into coil up on lead. Unscrew lead by SM

Copy ,  print and let me know you got it. Will delete it soon.

Got it, The wire seems like it is in good shape, i don't feel like pulling the saw all back apart to see if it does in fact unscrew I'll just replace boot and call it a day. Thanks
