MS390 carb jet
« on: October 07, 2013, 10:28:21 pm »
I am a new guy here and I am quite pleased to make everyone's acquaintance.  When I stumbled upon this forum, I felt like I had died and gone to heaven.  I am an older fella and one of my greatest hobbies for many, many years has been chainsaws, particularly repairing them, and especially the somewhat older ones.  Anyway, I won't bore you with my life history.  ;D  My current situation involves an MS310 for which I bought a brand new Stihl factory MS390 jug, piston, and ring.  I know I am going to have to rejet the carb, but I don't exactly what size jet I need or the part number.  I've been told by at least one person that the size should be .058, especially if you are planning on possibly doing any porting at some point, but I can't say for sure.  I also would like to know where would be the most reasonably priced place to order the little bugger.  I would appreciate any info on this I can get and any tips anyone might have.

Thanks!

I thought the 290, 310, & 390 used the same carburetor?

It is likely that your 310 carburetor will work just fine with your 390 as it is.

They all use the Walbro HD21C?

While it is very likely that each model in that series has a different size nozzle, I don't think you would really need to worry about it as the differences will be minimal.
I know of people running 029 sized jetted carbs with 039 top ends.....no issues.
If you feel you have a fuel starvation issue, you could just raise the metering lever a tad, but I doubt you will see a difference.

The HD-18 and HD-21 shows two different jets, the 0.54 for the 290,310,390 which also has the label "high altitude"
#1130-121-5600

It also shows a 0.58 jet for the 310 and 390  # 1130-121-5602,

which your saw has, I don't know.

I'll poke around the mediacat a little more, you should go to the thread and request a copy....

I've replaced a piston & cylinder on my Stihl 029(older MS290) with an aftermarket one for a Stihl 039(older MS390) & didn't replace the carburetor when doing so & I haven't had any issues, I used it 2 weekends ago & it cut great.

Thanks so much everyone for your help - I really appreciate it.  I think I am on the road to getting that thing percolating.  Can't wait to sock it into a big log close by and see what she does.

Thanks again,

Well you live in the same town as the Stihl distributor for 6 states, so parts buying shouldn't be a problem....
