New 044 oil pump or just change the seals?
« on: November 19, 2014, 09:10:30 am »
Yee Ha,  thanks to your help I got the old 044 running nicely.  So on to the next problem.

It leaks bar oil out the bottom.  I know it's bar oil becuase I cleaned and drained the oil tank and  it stopped leaking.

So...new oil pump or just seals? Shop manual says seals, but new pumps are so cheap.  Are seals easy to replace?  I've done old Harley seals before, and that wasn't too hard.

$17 ebay carb works like a champ.  Saw some cheap oil pumps:  $30 on the low end to $120 on the high end.

New worm gear as long as I have it apart?

Needs a new brake handle, so I'll do this job all at once.  Whatcha y'all thinkin'?

I would check the rubber line that runs into the oil tank. And the o ring on the tube. My guess would be the line dried out and shrunk. Would pull the covers clean every thing and see where exactly the leak is coming from.

According to  my manual I have to remove the everything down to the oil pump to get a look at the oil line.  Sounds like a lot of work.  Is there an easier way to get a look at the line and seals?

That's the way most chainsaws are.

Biggest problem for most people is spinning the clutch off. Remember the clutch has left hand threads.
