new project followed me home stihl 015av Help!
« on: April 02, 2013, 11:38:40 am »
so after using a husky with a 20" b/c to limb all weekend I thought I would try to find a smaller saw. out of the blue up pops this stihl 015av for twenty bucks. I couldn't resist, I hope it's not a hornets nest ??? I am in need of a service manual and ipl for this if anyone can help that would be great ;D. I guess i'll start with pulling the muffler to check the piston and if that looks ok I may just try to replace the pull cord and see if she'll run. does anyone have a good fix for the rotted rubber handle material? any help or ideas on this model will be appreciated.

There is a Internet guy that is actually a Stihl dealer that sells the Stihl hose material by the foot.

Most people use electrical shrink tubing but it doesn't have as much vibration absorption as some of the solutions.

Another is padded bicycle handle bar tape but you have to be good at lacing it.

I've been running a 015 since '76.  Cut lotsa wood, some large stuff also. Tuff little saw, hope you get yours running.
Had a few issues, crank seals, NLA, points & cond. plug wire, and the lousie air filter.
Switched from 1/4" chain to 3/8". what a waste of money, didn't cut any better, just the chains were cheaper, and had fewer teeth to sharpen.
every once and a while the recoil handle would rip out of my hand and break the tab off the choke lever, I just quit replacing them.
There is a hidden screw on the covers, find it or you'll never get it apart.
They are great little saws, worth the trouble to get running.
Always lookin to score free wood or chainsaws

just an update. pulled the saw apart, located carb kit and built carb. put in a new bosch spark plug and she fired right up. checked the oiler-works good. replaced the nla air filter with a briggs and Stratton screen and foam set up for a small engine. sharpened chain and enjoyed trimming branches without holding a ton of weight. this saw is not going to win any cutting competition but for a small saw I think it would hold it's own.
