new stihl 024 mahle SCUFFING?????????
« on: January 27, 2013, 08:53:55 pm »
hello all, new to this particular forum, and i have an issue.

i recently bought 2 new NOS 024 mahle P/C kits. i installed the first one today, and the saw is up and running great. i washed the cylinder well, and lubed it with stihl ultra prior to assembly. i also vac./pressure checked things prior to start-up. my question is this, should there be a tiny amount of scuffing as the P/C break in? i heat cycled the engine twice for 2-3 mins, and then pulled the muffler to check on things. there appears to be some very light scuff marks in the cylinder. is this normal? i shoved a rag in there on a plastic stick, and it seems to wipe away as if it is just the oil on the cyl. wall. i have been using saws for 30yrs, and usually sell/trade/or junk them once they are worn out. i am starting to slow down a little in life, and have recently enjoyed giving these old saws new life again, it is very good therapy for me.  thanks to all!

It's not unusual to find at least a few scuff marks which could be just honing marks ,a little bit of dust or the rings seating in .If you look at the new rings with a jewlers loupe you'll find out they aren't as mirror smooth as they might appear to the naked eye .

this saw runs perfect, starts hot or cold in 1 pull. seems to pull really well in the wood. it has about 15mins. time on the new top end. it seems to want to only pull 13,100 out of the wood. any leaner and it won't four stroke. will the rpm's improve as the rings set in?

Doubtfull out of the wood which really doesn't mean much except noise .What it pulls in the wood is what counts .Yeah it should improve a little with run time .

About the only way you can safely run it higher is by raising the ex time opening but to do so you'll have to pep up the compression and increase the fuel rate .It's kind of a fine line because you really can't do just a portion of a soup job without doing the rest.

If the thing runs okay just leave well enough alone. An 024 is lacking about a half a cubic inch to really consider for a 3 cube cookie cutter in my opinion .Neat little saw though .

RPM issue solved!!!!   i used a new 026/wt194 carb on this saw. for some reason the throttle rod was only opening the butterfly about 80-85%. problem fixed, and she is still four stroking nicely @ 13,800-14,000. now i feel it runs like it should.
