oiler won't quit oiling
« on: February 21, 2016, 07:44:34 pm »
My ms-261 after a day of work leaks bar oil on the floor, bed of my pickup and where ever else I park it. It isn't leaking around the oil pump area behind the clutch, its comeing out of the area where the saw oils the bar and chain.  I appreciate any help given.

Is the hole in the bar plugged? There is a vent behind the thin metal plate. Could be weeping from there.

The hole in the bar is open the thin cover I removed, oil is every place but after cleaning every thing up didn't seam to be comeing from there. But when I picked the saw up off the bench the oil on the bench leaked from underneath where you adjust the bar oiler at. So I took the clutch out and that entire cavity is soaked in bar oil.  The hose is on the pump. The oil pump bolts were tight. The oil pump is adjusted as low as it can go , compareing this saw to my 362 I think it oils too much none of my other saws has oil on the bars as bad as this 261 has on it.

I'm not familiar with that model .As a general statement though most oiling systems have some type of a check valve .If these get clogged up they will allow oil to weep by capillary action . Try storing the saw bar side up .Won't cure the problem but might stop the oil dribble .

Seriously it's past the dribble stage, depending on how much oil is in the tank is how much it will leak out, I have numerous oil spots on the floor that is as big as the powerhead. Last nite I stored the saw bar side up   no oil leaks, half a tank of oil.

I hope I have found my problem . My oil hose was on the nipple of the oil pump, looked alright but with a little push from a needle nose pliers it slide on farther till it bottomed out on the pump. Put it back together, run it for 10 minutes and parked it for the nite.  This morning maybe a nickle sized puddle on the floor. I can live with that. The only thing I can figure out is a little over a week ago I was blowing the crude off of it, I know I pointed my Blow gun in and around the clutch drum area thats the only thing I can think of that might have of moved the hose. For the people that responded    Thank You

I still have bar oil leaking out of my saw. Its come out of where it oils the Bar and chain. I was thinking about 7 years ago I had a ms 250 that was doing the same thing, I took the 250 to my local dealer he stuck a blow gun in the tank and wrapped a rag around the blow gun to try to seal the tank and give it a short burst of air. That did fix the 250.  I'll try that with the 261 an see what the results are in the morning or after work

+1 on the check valve, especially if it is an older saw, or maybe a bit dirty.

Other options (I have done all of these):

1. Vent the bar oil tank after use, by opening up the filler cap to balance any pressure inside:

2. Place oil absorbent mats under the saws, in their cases, on the storage shelves, etc. These soak up way more oil than newspapers, paper towels, etc.
e.g. New Pig #403 Oil - Only Mat (or the equivalent) - about 50 cents each in quantity: http://www.newpig.com

3. If I have a 'leaker' saw, or one that I just do not plan to use for several days, I just drain the bar oil back into the jug.  No need to absorb it and throw it out.  I use those disposable, paper funnels that most gas stations give you for free, so there is no clean-up of the sticky bar oil from a plastic or metal funnel.

A quick follow up on what I did. Last thursday evening I drained my bar oil out of the tank. I than put 2 ozs of Diesel fuel in the oil tank and ran it at various rpm's until I ran it empty. Sat I filled it up with bar oil, made sure it was oiling, than run her hard .  Its still full of oil and no oil leaks of any kind on the floor. I'm going to say it was a stuck check valve and a partially disconnected oil pump hose.    Thank you everyone for your help.             Happy oiler in central KS.
