Painting a 660
« on: November 19, 2012, 09:30:38 pm »
I am trying to paint the crankcase. And would like to strip the old paint before I repaint it. Does any one know of a stripper that I can use that won't mess with the aluminum. Thanks for your help.

Well let me put it to you like this .Oh about maybe two years I got an 038 Mag,early model that developed a leak in the oil tank because of too long of screws in the handle .I have no way to weld aluminum alloy so I took the case half with the leak to work with me .

I had to remove that coating with a diegrinder because a power stiff wire brush on a 10 HP pedistool grinder wouldn't touch it .We're talking hard as glass .

Now what you might do is use acetone to clean it up as best you can and possibley paint over it with the color you can get through a Stihl dealer which is a direct color match to the original .Else other than that you'll be at it a month of Sundays getting that thing down to bare aluminum .

I got an aircraft paint stripper today. Sprayed it on and let it sit for 5 minutes and It was peeling off well. It says to leave on for 15 minutes then scrape. But just wanted to see if it would work. Did it on a scrap case to see if it effects the magnesium. let you know tomorrow.

Go to advanceauto parts and get a can of "TALSTRIP" it'll even strip powdercoat. Toughest stuff I've found.

Nice.

Never seen one stripped down bare like that. That also gave me a idea. Does mag cases buff to a high shine bare?

Thanks. I think I was thinking the same thing you are. If you get it to work let me know I would love to have one with a bare mag look. That would be cool.  I think it might be possible, but don't have a clue where to start.
