034 av ?
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:55:17 pm »
So off to the saw shop today and raided the dead pile .034 av or so it says .Scored piston but has compression and I don't think scuffed the cylinder.Evidently a small leak ,probabley a seal .

Cheap as dirt ,needs a clutch cover which is no big deal and an air box cover .

I never measured the bore but found an oddity .This thing has a rear discharge muffler and the flatter cover like an 036 ,no baffle cage ,screen in the "gutted " rear half ..The "book" only lists this style of muff under 036 not 034 .

So now the big question  does it make  difference when the saw was made or where if it has this type muff ? I know a fair amount about Stihls but am far from an expert on their little perks of manufacture .I might assume that if the bore measures 48 MM instead of 46 it would be an 034 super but it doesn't indicate so on the cover which is more squared off than the other one I had .

Al I posted and sent PM with stihl 034 IPL and shows mufflers used on page 7. The one you describe shows there, I think.

My curiosity got the best of me so I measured the bore ,aha 48 MM which means it's a super .More than I bargained for, talk about blind luck .

I would have thought the name plate might be something like the 038s' where it said Av,Super or mag but evidently not .

It'll warm up someday or at least it always has in the past .So come that time I'll peel it down and see what I have to work and go from there .Fact I just might have a clutch side cover so all I'll need is a piston and air filter cover if the cylinder isn't toast .

The cover is intact ,no trim job  but the plot thickens .This thing has numbers 1125 084 0900 .These do not match up with the two covers they show for the 034 Av and super nor the 036.Plus the fact unlike the one Kevin got the cover sits straight as a die on this thing .The other one we couldn't collectively figure out what in the world was wrong with it .

So with regards to the popular  converson of 036 cylinder on the 034 although they are a direct bolt on something evidently has to be slightly different about the 034 super cylinder and the 036 .

After thought : I googled that number and danged if "saw again " doesn't have one listed .So Stihl must change part numbers about as often as McCulloch used to or they aren't telling the whole story in the IPLs' .

So here's more on this saga .I pulled down the parts box of a couple junk 029 in the shed just to check things out .Would you believe the clutch side cover is a direct fit on this 034 .Stihl must have gotten their heads outta their butts because at one time every danged part was model specific on these things.Looken good down to a piston ,bar plate and air box cover .Oh yeah ,3/8" 7  small spline rim sprocket .Danged thing is set up for .325 .

Now why in the world would you use .325 on a 60 cc saw ?

To help throw a wrench in your saga.....the 034 I am rebuilding is of the early flavor.
Whats that mean?
No inner or outer bar plates.

Is it side or front chain adjust?

Side adjust so it's probabley a later model .Good old Northwood has the plate ,cheap too .My IPL shows an inner plate and side adjuster .

Parts aren't a problem .Between Northwood and Scott at Chainsawr I'll find them  plus I have a couple more sources .

In spite of the fact the exhaust side of the piston is scorched it has plenty of compression. It might just be a buff job and good to go .Fact since I'm thinking about I'm going to trot off to the garage ,pull the plug and see if it has any sticking spots .
