Red stihl on off switch
« on: November 30, 2014, 10:37:29 am »
I know in the past I have been ask when I get stihls in people ask me if red on off switch or not.  Whats the difference in the saws with the red switch?

I know D combustion chamber cylinders were on some stihls but never linked it to red switches.

I'm in a area where this one was for sale and got me wondering.

When you work on them, some switches are red and some are black. They are made the same on the inside.

I guess that wasn't the point?

I looked at my Stihls. First of all, they are so old and having been mixed and matched, it would be hard to say?

Of this picture of 025's / MS 250. The oldest of the 025's has a red choke lever and the small 2 port cylinder. It was a 1991 model but after having worked on it. The parts are mixtures of all years of 025's and MS250's even though it was a one owner. It's a sweet heart to use.

025's http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=274.0;attach=7246;image

And I have this 026 and you say it has a "D" shaped combustion chamber but it has a black choke lever. I don't consider this saw to be a valid example as it is a old one with mixed and matched parts. Excellent saw though.

I was told that about the 044`s. But I assumed it was because it had the more desirable 10mm crank.

My point up above is that it would be hard to tell about a red choke lever by looking at old Stihls because they likely have many substituted parts from other saws.

Most old Stihls have parts from many different years. They are older and were used right along all those years and as parts wear out or break, they are replaced.

Mine are all that way. My 066 is definitely a 066 but as you study it, you discover 066 parts from three different generations of 066's.

I wouldn't trade any of my remaining Stihls for a Husqvarna or Dolmar. I like my Stihls just the way they are and my other popular brands for themselves.

I looked in the IPL's and there's just a choke lever - one number - no red or black?

I just got to call the stihl guru to refresh my memory. I have forgotten everything he had told me in the past about the red switch deal.

From what was said in the phone call.

The red switched 026, 034, 034 super, 044 are the strongest runners in the stock form they have run and owned.  Thinks it has to do with the stock porting numbers of transfers and exhaust.

Possibly the different walbro and tillotson carbs making a difference too

The D shaped CC has nothing to do with red switched saws.

The 066 red switch  hasnt noticed anything much different then other flat tops.
