Salt water 260
« on: October 18, 2015, 08:35:44 pm »
Have an interesting project. MS260 that looks mint on the outside but needs a lot of work. Storm surge flooded a shed with 2 feet of sea water. Saw was submerged then left for 5 months before needed. Piston is stuck, carb is stuck, flywheel pitted.

Saw was free, may be able to salvage it. Any ideas?

Salt and aluminum don't get along well. If you got an afternoon with nothing on tv, why not tear it down for grins. You might salvage some useful parts.

You need to check the crankcase for the white death.  It may not be worth salvaging.

When I was at Stihl we had one sea can from Germany come in with pro saws . Can had leaked and all the saws that were exposed (wet boxes) got crushed . Make you cry , most had no sign of salt damage .

Magnesium and salt water are a bad mix , salt eats it on contact .
