self ventilated ms880
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:36:07 am »
so i have a good friend that runs a firewood busy-ness on the side. has a couple of 2-3 yearold stihl ms880s' he uses for the processor. i "built" the older one a couple of years ago and the newer one early last summer (june 2011). last week he calls me up and says that the clutch blew on the newer saw and it took out the case through into the oil tank. he liked the extra oil, but he couldn't keep up with filling the tank :D
he brought it over for me to see if i could save the case as if it wasn't "saveable" it was going in a trade for a nice new 3120 husky. (he's just looking for an excuse). so i says i'll do the jb weld treatment and get it back up for the rest of the season.
it's pretty bad. the saw needs a case half, but the cost of one, plus the periferals is more than he's willing to spend on a high hour saw, buisness is buisness, and the saws need to be up again right away. however i digress....
here's the pics before the fix, i'll get the fixed one up sometime today.

most of the small bits under the clutch were pretty screwed up and need to be replaced, the chainbrake won't be there anymore (no real need for it anyway) and there is going to be alot of cleaning the case up to fit everthing back in as mag likes to burr and gall while being eaten by the clutch and drum :) he looked and couldn't find the shoes, drum or bearing, but the spider was there as was the clip :) there wasn't anything left of the clutch cover to salvage, so that will be replaced be a chunk of flat bar and the clutch wil npw be open.
the saw is turning around 13500 out of the wood, runs a 25" bar/404 chain. the 'older saw" did sort of the same thing a few months back but it only sheared the oiler off it's mount and put a small hole in the bottom where the oiler adjusment screw goes through. that clutch drum was split right where the little finger for the oiler gear fits in.
is this a common problem with these 880's? can't find anything out there saying it is.. oh well, time for some jb welding ;D

1-2-potato! ;D

AAAAAH dunnnn! no leaks, runs good, cuts good. even for a stihl! ;D
should hold well and last. ran it for almost 3 hours until the "new" neighbor came a complaining >:( freaking city folk think they deserve special treatment. told him to bite it and restarted the saw. also told him he'll be getting more 'special treatment' at about 5:30-6am tomorrow morning. we're allowed to make noise around here at that time as it's farming country.. made sure the sawhorse is moved right up to the property line and i'll be cutting with the muffler pointed at him. this is a guy that runs either his backhoe or 36" wood planer until all hours of the night. nobody has complained about that..... warned mr/mrs. stewart across the road and they smiled and said have fun! sure wish mr. mcfadden was still living beside me. it was a poor day in hell when he had to go to the hospice.
now the new guy drives around bitching about everybody on the road.... long story for another day and another thread :)

Wow that right there is a miracle fix with the JB. WTG.

Since you are the miracle worker right now, come on down here and figure out this wiring to my rear truck lights on my possessed plow truck  I am trying to get ready for winter.  Had a shock mount come off and take the wiring out. Now I cant get chit to work right from fuse box back.

he's the only guy near Brockville with a chainsaw based processor.
Built it out of a older boom truck, used to have 372's mounted somehow as the cutter.
This was 7 years ago or so, thought he might have upgraded saw size....

I'm surprised you saved that thing

:)nope not him but that isn't anything out of the ordinary. there is alot of people that like to stick with the "mechanics" they know. it's hard to turn somebody on to anybody else until they get burned. which is how i get most of my work. :D
do honest work and you'll keep your customers. screw them over and they'll find me. is what i keep saying when i see one or 2 of the local small engine shop owners.

Probabley split the rim which popped the e-clip off and blew the clutch to kingdom come .That's one problem with running without the clutch cover, nothing to stop the drum from walking off .

FWIW the Stihl cases can be heli-arced but it's a beech to get all the baked on paint or e-coat which ever it is off before hand .Plus it takes a special filler rod because it's a different alloy .I'll have to ask the guy at work which rod he used when he welded a set of cases for me on an 038 mag .

Nice job with the J-B . It'll hold but not forever .

;)i agree on the drum splitting, al . but the clip was still in place when he shut it down :)i actualy reused the clip as there was no damage to it. not even a slight rub mark. and if sombody needs the spider, it's in good shape as well :D
it only has to last a month or so. he really wants to get a couple of husky 3120s'. no idea why. these 880s' have been very good to him. and they've seen more actual work then most 880s'really ever would.
i pulled the muffler and carb off of this one to have a quick look (the carb had to be rebuilt anyway) and you can see the skirt is starting to wear near the bottom on what looks to be both sides. there isn't any piston slap and everything still fits tight but you can see whats next to wear out.
you have to realize, this saw would be ran from 6 in the morning until 6 at night for 5-6 months straight. and has basicly been doing that for whats actually almost 3 years. plus any milling he does. granted, he changes out the saws a couple times a day just to give them a look over and sharpening, but you get the idea. :)
