Small pin 044
« on: August 09, 2015, 11:40:48 pm »
Rebuilding an old small pin 044 and noticed the crank bearings have metal shields on the inside, kinda odd.  Anybody seen this?

Jacob J mentioned those. I think there was a service bulletin way back to replace them.

So stihl tried running shields inside at one time.  So they were packed in grease?  No mix getting through for lubing.

Don't know if they were factory greased, be interesting to know.
This this saw had both seals pulled when I got it , so I suspect it had a seal issue that was never fixed.  Bearings are still smooth. Gonna pull the metal bearing seals and put new Stihl seals on the crank.

Called the local stihl dealer to check prices on pto bearing for the 44 and to my surprise they're only $15.   Seem to remember these being in the $40 range?

Stihl parts have dropped considerably. My dealer said it was to compete with aftermarket so less people would rebuild them with China junk that don't last and they get a bad rap for stihl. It used to be $100 for bearings and seals and now it's about $60.

Yes I remember that service bulletin around late 1989. I should have it in a binder I kept from when I worked for Stihl Canada back then.
If memory serves me correct the bearings were packed with same Stihl grease used for brush cutters heads and clutch drum bearing and bar nose  grease guns.
Making a living with a saw since age 16.

Very interesting! Seems like it could be a good system with a high quality modern lubricant.   Thanks
