Side note/question:  The 044 uses a spacer that the crank seal lip rides on and clutch assembly is spaced away from crank with.  The fit of the spacer is a loose press fit and I'm wondering if the tension of the clutch pushing the spacer against the crank shoulder is sufficient to seal or should I use a retaining compound on the spacer.
 service bulletin info on this?

Also, can't see the spacer on any new/old IPLs

Rebuilding an old small pin 044 and noticed the crank bearings have metal shields on the inside, kinda odd.  Anybody seen this?

Yeah the pic didn't  look right when I first saw it on my phone, should have zoomed it in.
Definitely not a sealed bearing . I looked for the 044 service bulletin no luck might find it in another pile of boxes. Trouble with not having Internet back in the day. Probably was the upgrade away from the shielded bearings.
Can't remember which saw had the sealed bearing at one time......064?
I remember my old Jonsereds having them.

I little known secret concerning high speed precision bearings.

When they set up same they remove the seals, wash all the original grease out and then pack the bearng with high speed grease .--then believe or not they use compressed air and blow out the excess .Then replace the seals .

It seems to go like this .What ever the small amount the balls can carry, just a slight film ,is all the bearing needs .Any more than that s detrimental .Sounds crazy but that's the way it's done .

Grease as we know it in reality is just oil with a thickening agent .

We had a furnace with a roller conveyor traveling through it. Ran about 1550 F.

Shut it down for PM and greased all the bearings on the roller ends outside the furnace. On start up, the conveyor motor wouldn't pull the conveyor because of all the grease in the bearings. We had to install a bigger driver & servo motor.  After the grease pushed outside the seals, it pulled OK.
