I hope I'm not butting in but in 1979, I think, my friend bought a 031 new, a little later it needed points and he ask me to put them in, expensive too, best I remember. I couldn't adjust through the flywheel so I keep looking and found a timing mark at about 2:00 on the case and a mark on the flywheel, I hooked a single wire from the points out to hook to my ohm meter, no other wires, then I turned the flywheel until the points either broke open or closed, can't remember, when the marks aligned, had to take off the wheel to move points so I never tightened it until I was done. Saw run like a 60cc saw and still does. Never had another set of points since. I think the factory had those points set wrong. In 62 yrs I lucked up one time, cause I just ain't that smart.

At 2 oclock is most likely when they are closed which would be 60 degrees .They should break at somewhere around 1 if I have it figured correctly .I might have the service manual on micro fiche ,I'll check

Okay I found this for an 041 which should be the same .It should open at 2.4-2.6 mm before top dead center or .094 to .102" .measured by a dial indicator through the spark plug hole .The gap on the points should be .35-.4 mm or .014-.016 ".measured at top dead center piston travel .I would guess that to be 26-27 degrees advance .The 041 drawing indicated a cam lobe like a 4 cycle cam shaft as opposed to a flat spot used by McCulloch .They both do the same thing depending on how the points are designed .
Due to the fact it's a lobe then setting the points gap closer should advance the timing .Open sooner .

Full Of Marvel Mystery oil, tap on the piston about once every other week with a hard wood dowel thru the spark plug hole.

With the summer nearing I have been to busy to deal with it properly.
