Sthil 031 AV.
« on: April 04, 2019, 06:19:48 pm »
Saw was bought mid 1970's by my dad. I used it a little bit but was really disapointed in it.
After I got married in 1985 I didn't get to cut with dad much and I don't know any history of the saw after 1985.

I owned the farm where my folks were living and had a big garage 52x24 garage there so when dad passed I was cleaning it up and displaceing all the people who thought it was their private work shop with some unique door lock systems.

I went all thru that shop and never saw dads saw so I asked my brother about it when I seen hi. He said dad had some problem with it and took it to a small engine repair guy who told him it was not worth repairing. I called that guy and he said my dad had picked it up when it wasn't worth fixing.

Funny thing that missing saw next time I was there about 3 weeks later the saw sat in front of one of the big over head doors.

It is locked up so I brought it home and poured some diesel acetone mix in there. It has been sitting under my bench for about 5 years full of that mix and it is still locked up.
I see I can buy a new Jug, Piston, wrist pin and bearings for it.

I sure can't figure out how to get to the jug to get it off the case.
Is there an IPL I can down load and use?

Been reading how to expose the cylinder and also reading a couple different replacement cylinder reviews.

Is there any certien company that stands above the others?

They are kind of an odd ball and I've only ever seen two of them .One I tuned for a  neighbor and one in the dead pile at a dealers .They are only 48 cc's so you can't expect much out of them .
A little trick to unstick one is first letting them soak in some type  of penetrating oil for a while. Then if it's stuck above the ports use the threaded part of a spark plug and braze in a grease zert and use a grease gun full of oil to hydraulically  move the piston .A standard grease gun puts out about 5,000 PSI so it will either come or bleed .You only have to move the piston  about 1/8 of an inch to free it .Unbolt  the cylinder first in case it's stuck on the bearings .
Something like this a dealer really doesn't want to deal with .At most likely at least 60 bucks an hour it won't take long before the repair bill would  far exceeded the value of the saw .Which is not to say it can't be DIY because I do it all the time. All this said if you do get it running it will cut wood it just won't be very fast .---good luck---

Here's another trick .I had a guy give me a McCulloch 700 with a bad recoil he found in a dumpster ,bar ,chain and every thing  .Stuck tight as a bulls butt in fly time .I gave it the Kroil treatment and after about a week used a hardwood block and a little ball peen and gave a few light taps on the flywheel every day or so .After about a week it freed up .Rebuilt the cab, fixed the recoil and never did another thing else  to  it and it runs like a top .

Thanks Al I will be doing the work as it was my dads. Other wise I would scrap it out. Never really impressed me back in the day.

I have a Husky 55 EPA is right around 50CC's and it impresses me a lot more.

You have to remember when these things were made ,1971 and 48 cc .I looked at the parts list and it shows both points type ignition plus two types of solid state trigger units .I would guess on the points some where between 18 to 20 thou. gap .Tight would fire late and wider would fire early .Most Stihls are set to fire around 27 thou before top dead center.A couple degrees advance might pep it up some but too much you'd have a hard time starting it .
Just about any saw can be enhanced to preform better ,just depends on how much you want to do to them .On any engine you have to remember if the exhaust can't get out the fuel and air can't get in .So you start with the exhaust .That saw does not show a two piece muffler so in order the rework the muffler it could be a problem .In order the cut the baffles out you have to cut the muffler cover off and weld or braze it back on .Not doing that perhaps enlarging the exit hole would help just don't get carried away with it .Hugely bigger is not always better .You are safe if you don't go any larger on the hole than about 80-85 percent of the area of the exhaust port .After that it just gets louder with no or very little gains and take a chance of cooking the piston because it's over running the carb .On the other hand if you just want to make it run just leave things alone .Which is probably what I would do . Good luck

Just want to get dads old saw back running. Not really wanting to modfy it at all. I have it soaking right now.

I see where they were changeing the ones with points to a module. I have not shopped to see if they still sell a module or not but that I think would be the way to go I bet.

Thank you for all the information.

If the IPL is correct it shows a couple of plugs in the flywheel which I assume is for access to the points .If it does indeed have points about the only thing that would go  wrong usually would be the points themselves  need burnished and set .It might even have spark once you get it shook loose .
