« on: September 02, 2013, 07:32:30 am »
Does any one  know what the engine acts like when there is a leaking reed. Will they suck air, like a bad crank seal. not real familiar with a reed engine.

Bad reed valve(s) . . .

Spiting back through the carb

Carb does not pump fuel well - when trying to start the engine, it will just "pop" and never actually run.

Poor uneven idle

You can hear the reed valve function if you open the carburetor or even remove the carburetor.

Best move about the reed valve is if it is a separate assembly is to remove the reed block and examine it though a light for how well it seats and if there is any damage.

In the old days, a engine that was run at too high speed for longer periods of time would warp the reed and you could see the reed stand up off its seat. You could turn the reed over in most of these situations and it would seat again. The reed limiter plate on top of the reeds was to keep the reed from getting bent.

The old metal reeds would split closer to where they were fastened after many hours of use.

Reeds can be made of steel shim stock from McMaster-Carr

Now days, reeds are fiber glass. You can buy it also from McMaster-Carr but the definitive fiberglass reed maker is Boyesen

Fiber glass reeds will splinter on the outer corners

Thanks that was what I was looking for. This is my winter project. Repaint, rebuild etc. Just wanted to know what to look for and how to check.
