Stihl 015
« on: February 11, 2013, 01:02:55 pm »
Here ya go sports fans one I've never seen before ,015.I bought this thing from a dealer about an hour ago for 50 bucks, with a case and another nearly new 1/4" chain . For the fact it's 40 years old looks nearly little used ,it belonged to a doctor .

I certainly do not need another baby saw but my wifes cousin with a bad back does .I don't think it has quite the grunt the green s-25 Poulan in the picture does but for a 2 cuber it really isn't that bad plus it runs like a top .All I did was gas it and gave it a prime .What  the hey 50 bucks if he gets two years out of it he can throw it away and be money ahead .

I bought one new back in '76 for $150.
I can't remember how much wood that little saw has cut, doesn't owe me a dime.
It now sits in retirement, replaced by a 024, a 026,a DCS340, and the list goes on for 15 more.
OK, I'm a chainsaw ****.

I also have a 020 AVP that has issues, I think it's in the carb, check valve in the power jet is NG.
Its a nice saw, little heavy. All metal, with profesional on the rear handle.
Is it worth while to attempt to get it running ?

New Stihl carbs are usually pretty cheap these days.

Replace the one with the bad HS nozzle check valve.

Thanks for the reply, will check it out.

Right now I'm polishing a turd, putting a Bailey's 039 engine in a 029S.

Then there's the three orange saws that need TLC,  two 350.s and a 55.
Cylinders look good but the pistons are scored, looking at new pistons and rings minimum.

So many saws and so little time/ money.

At least, my Grandson will enjoy using these old saws.

I've got a top handle version of the 020 .They're kind of a pain to get into .When it's running correctly it's got about as much go as a Poulan S-25 ,certainly not as much as a 200T though .

Admit it Al, you weren't thinking of  your wife's cousin with the bad back. You just needed another baby saw to keep the other two compay. But I think deep down you bought that saw for that big bulky useless case ;) ;) Just thought I would say hello and be a pain in your side ;D ;D

How ya doing Larry .No I certainly don't need another micro saw .

I kinda had my head in butt at the dealers because he had a hung up 034 in the dead pile on the cheap .Straight gassed I'd assume .I just may have to trot on back  and get that thing and make another freakinstien with an 036 top end .This one I'll tweek .

Digging through the dead pile you can find all kinds of possibilites but if they are half stripped out you can put more money in the danged things than they are worth if they aren't mostly all there .I found a couple 024's which I was looking for but they were hung or boned out .I've think so far I've pulled 4 out of that dealer and every one is a runner .Every one 50 bucks or less .Al the cheapskate --- ;D

Your not being a cheapskate. If you can rebuild them your money ahead considering what a new Stihl cost these days especially the bigger ones.

Hey AL:
Sorry I Hi-jacked your tread the other day, but us old timers tend to do that.
I was thinking how much the construction of the 015 resembled the 020 AVP  and went off on a tangent, as usual.

I was gonna list the repairs I made to my 015 saw over the last almost forty years.
Fuel filter, plug wire, points and condencer/breaker plate and the hardest to locate, crank seals.

The 1/4" chain was getting hard to find/ (before I found Bailey's)/ and changed over to 3/8" LP. That meant a new bar,
clutch drum and oil pump gear.
Honestly, the only advantage was less cutters to sharpen and cheaper chain. The cost didn't outweigh the advantage.

My saw came with the case,  piston stop, wedge,  wrench and a mini service manual. Quite a deal for $150.

I don't think I'll ever get the same service from my mini-Macs or the Wild-Thing.

I have plenty of saws in  the 50cc to 65cc range, even a Dolly 7900 for the big stuff,  a OEM 7900 P&C just in case I find a spanked DCW 6400.

Goodness, he's running off at then mouth again.
GOTTA GET BACK TO POLISHING MY TURD

SAY GOODBYE FRED,
GOODBYE FRED.

Actually I took a gander though e-bay and was surprised in the amount of parts available for the thing I had never seen in my life including loops of new 1/4" chain .Cheap too by comparrison .

I'd imagine simply by the age it resembles in some what the 020 AV .It's kind of like a top handle but more so on the design of the Poulan s-25 which really isn't a true top handle design .Close but the balance is more rearward than over the center of the mass of the saw .It would be about as awkward one handing as the Poulan but keeping in mind of course nobody one hands a saw . ;)

I really don't know what the idea of design was because they had the 010s' and 11s' which were little rear handled models .Just a little short saw is all I know .
