Stihl 029, MS290 Max RPM's
« on: December 06, 2014, 07:38:32 am »
Had 029 Super come in for repair.  Replaced fuel line, pull start and carb.  I tune customers saws by tach as most don't know how to tune a saw.  Went in my old 2003 Stihl CD to check max rpms.  Max rpm 029S 12,500 MS 290 is 13,500.  Both are 46mm.  Question is why there a 1,000 rpm difference?

Newer technology. MS290 probably has improved porting and carburetion.

Just for firewood cutting, I'd probably just set my 029/MS-290 to 12,500?  The engine will last longer.

I usually tach them 12.5 just to give a bit of buffer.

Same here.

That was my thinking too.  Port timing is where I think it is carbs are the same on the Super and MS that I have.
