STIHL 034/036 KICKS like a Mule
« on: November 17, 2019, 07:06:25 pm »
I have a Stihl 034 or 036 . The S/N is 114994544 but no one can tell me what it is. It has 036 on the starting rope mechanism and 034 AV on the top cover. I looked up the part number on the brake and it shows 034 or 036. It ran good yesterday but had a problem getting it started. The compression was like a mule kick. I took out the sparkplug and put Seafoam in the sparkplug hole and pull a few times and tried again and started and cut up a tree. Today it's the mule kick again Only turns about one stroke of the piston (6 inches on rope) When I pulled the sparkplug it pulls easy. I took off the muffler and the piston sides looks very smooth...except there is a film on top of the cylinder about the thicknss of a piece of paper. I can lift it with a pencil about 1/8 high as far as I tried. The top of Piston from the carburetor side shows some carbon build up. ( not shinny but even probably the same as was indicated from the muffler view.) Question first does anyone know which saw it is from the S/N?. 2. How do I get it to pull without the mule kick?  I don't see any decompression valve. How is the best way to remove the carbon without taking apart?

Stihl dealer can run the serial number. If it was registered in system when sold.
Can tell what model it is and what year.

A few stihl dealers here but most of the online stihl dealers that run them are on my chainsaw repair group FB. I had a 066 660 parts saw ran to find out what I took on trade, being it was missing covers.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/415662708518445/2676674009083959/?comment_id=2677764872308206&reply_comment_id=2677778138973546&notif_id=1574017737568367&notif_t=group_comment_mention

I would guess timing or the carbon just making the psi to much for ya.  The ole 3300 54cc my dad ran for 25+ years was that way for him.  I put a stihl 460 rescue handle on it to buy him some more time.  Like 5-6 at stihl.

How about measuring the bore on your saw.    034 is 46 mm.   the 036 is 48mm.
PP 505, 475, 445.

Kicking back and pulling hard are not the same thing .As an example on a 2100 CD Husqvarna which 99 cc ,when I got it was all I could do to pull it over .
Come the find out the bushing in the starter drum was worn out causing it to engage eccentric .It was a nylon bushing which I made a brass replacement which tamed it down .Due to the fact the machine by nature is  high compression I also used a Stihl 460 rescue saw D-handle . I had a couple of others over the years but right now I can't remember which ones .
