stihl 048 piston
« on: October 09, 2014, 07:00:00 pm »
Rob says this is a west coast piston mod done on a stihl 048.

He says the top of the piston has been cut down in in 3 spots, v-shaped if you look close.

Any info on this?

Kev,  looks like the exhaust and transfer timing has been altered by cutting the piston crown down.  Works and can be a good way to experiment with timing changes on a piston which is a lot less costly than a cylinder. In my experience, .100 of an inch of material remaining over the ring land is absolute minimum.

Pretty fuzzy pic.  You can trim the skirt on the intake side for timing changes too.
