In the 80's I had to work on lots of 031's,I did see a couple of 030's,they were obviously an early version of the 031,not a lot different. The customers liked their 031's but honestly(apologies to anyone I may offend) I hated them, they were awkward to work on,and often suffered from really hard to cure ignition problems, both points and electronic models. Then the 032 came out and much to my dismay the boss sold 15 of them to one contractor. I was expecting a nightmare of these saws returning but the 032 proved to be very reliable, the ignition problems were gone and I gained real respect for the saw.
The toughest thing with the points models was setting the point gap, best at .015" to .016",but almost impossible to do thru the tiny hole in the flywheel,so finally one day I took a used 031 flywheel and smashed the outer aluminum assembly off, just keeping the steel core with the point cam, then I could put it on any 031,set the points easily, then install the original flywheel and they worked great. I believe Stihl sold a special tool which was essentially the same thing I made.

Just had 3 saws dropped off and quick look over. Wondering on the 030 if the lower left front handle AV can still be had? Is this AV the same on the 031?

UPDATE: Yep same av and many more saws use it. Yep for sale still. Good to go.

OK the upper right av on this 030 is different. Longer on left. They change through the years on these.

Guessing early 030 and change was made later in run?

Left was one that came out. NOS stihl one on right for 030 031 032

Was told do what I needed to do.

I searched and it must just be a change made later. Guessing this is early 030. Dont laugh but I rednecked it.  Went together and used thread locker.
