If I recall correctly they had ran that thing without the retainer,e clip or bearing in the clutch which broke a clutch shoe and messed up the cover .I think I might have used a shoe and springs from either an 029 or 039 to repair it .Looked good though after you got done with it .

Had a customer yesterday drop off a 034AV for a tuneup and 2 loops of new chains.
It appears to be a Wood Boss with newer caps, Made in USA but has no worm gear chain tensioner, only a front mount screw.
I have never owned a consumer grade saw before so I'm not all that knowledgeable about them.
Did Stihl cheapen up the 034AV to be a Wood Boss by not putting  in a worm gear side tensioner and installing a spur drum?
Here's some pics.

Hello Holman;  Ironicaly, I ran a really strong 034 av the other day for a friend of mine.  Needed his carb adjusted & chain touched up.  I had always thought the 024, 034, 036, 038 series of saws as being more of a semi-pro, or pro class of saw, rather than a homeowner, being a magnesium case and all.  Correct me if I'm wrong, as I would really like to know.  Of course the Husky 353 has a "mag" case also, and its not considered a pro class/xp either, so I suppose you cannot really go by that.  Maybe this applies to the 034 as well.  I do know this series of saws are "darn" good ones for longevity.  I really like them and I'm more of a Husky guy.  :)

From what I understood the bottom one was a early 034 with front tensioner converted over. But as you can see from your top 034 dont look like area to covert on that one.

One came in for you looks like the 2 piece dust cover. The one I did took that too but couldnt find it so made a 1 piece work.

Thanks guys for the input.
I bought a 034AV when they first came out in 1984 when I was cut and skid logging. At the time it didn't have the grunt of my Jonsered 630 and 038AV but it was sure light and quick in small spruce and Jack pine.
It's side tensioner was a very unique feature then as no other saw had it.
I replaced it with a 038Mag in 1985.
My brother bought a 034 Super (61cc) around 1986 and it was a good improvement in power.
By then I had already bought a 064 and ran 18" b/c with it in all size of wood.

But I have a suspicion this was a 1990's made in USA 034 with a less expensive crankcase sold as a Wood Boss for non professional work.

I know the feeling. I found the chain drive link measure tape deal I misplaced  7-10 years  ago looking for the misplaced chainsaw buddy attachment the other day.   Still no CB.  Just smh.

The largest piece of lost equipment I ever heard of was a cable lift D8 Caterpillar .The operator was clearing brush, his boss came  to get him for another job.He just parked the machine on the other side of a clump of trees and forgot all about it .It was 4 or 5 years later they found it with saplings growing up through the tracks .BTW the boss owned at that time one of the largest road building companies  in  the State of Ohio so he had lots of equipment .He didn't even miss one old D8 .
