Stihl 038
« on: July 07, 2011, 01:20:41 pm »
I know nothing about the 038 series of saws. If I recall there was the 038  038 super and 038 magnum. Do the tanks all interchange?

Just trying to help a guy out in the back ground.  Now my question do they all use the same tanks?  Plastic or metal?

If they were like the 028 they started with metal tanks on early 038.

Ask away, what do you want to know . The lower handle /tank is different .The AV's used a die cast handle ,the Mags thermal plastic .I can't speak on the supers as I've only ever seen a few and never worked on one .They will interchange though . The plastic deal will take more abuse than the die cast aluminum .

On that though be carefull to use the correct screws .The plastic handle uses something that looks like a woodscew .If you use too long of a screw it will punch right through the oil tank  from vibration .Go to the dealer ,swallow your pride and buy the right ones for a buck or two a pop .It's a lot more simple than splitting a cases and welding up a leaky tank .Traveled that road ,didn't like it .

FWIW to the gear heads this is one model you can really make boogie if you have the know how .It's my favorite of all Stihls next to the 020/200T . They are tough too .I have a mag that spent 20 extremely hard years in service for a tree service company and being about 2/3 worn out it can still get-er-done in grand style .

Still havent figured out which 038. Guy says it is a 038 and tank started leaking around a JB patch job after 10 or so years. He ground the JB off and found some pretty good holes he said. I still dont know if metal or plastic tank. I told him how I would patch it.

He said he didnt want to spend $150 for a new tank, which I dont blame him.  Trying to figure out what he needs and then could look for a used one too if the patch dont work.

Thanks for info guys.

Those holes in the tank most likely were caused by too long of screws being used on the forward part of the handle .

The replacement handle which contains the gas tank in the assembley is over 200 bucks new and will fetch half that on flea bay . Probabley a decent 038 mag  might fetch 225 maybe 250 so that's a lotta green to be laying out for repairs .

This one model that might for some reason have cases you can't even find the numbers for on the IPL .I've got one set that appears to have screw mounts for points .Where that came from I have no idea .

Some people have slotted out 038 mag cylinders and refitted them to 038 av cases .I suppose it can be done but I always questioned if the cylinder could walk around after a period of time and avoided the practice .

On this saw in question ,were it I ,I believe I'd find a good set of cases and go from there .Like I said I welded up a set and it seems to be holding but the diecast alloy Stihl uses is not the easiest to weld .J-B cold weld will work but not indefinately .

Say I just did a fly by on flea bay and they list a bunch of cases .Some say 038,some say super but I saw no mags with the exception of a few parts saws .

There must be half a dozen listed by Bryce S ,AKA "cheap chainsaw parts " .If a guy were to PM him with the part numbers off the damaged case he'd make sure you get the right ones .

For about 50 bucks more or less you'd stand a better chance than knocking one apart and welding the cases .

I might add there are 3 or 4 different air filter covers but I believe it' all to do with the screws on the filter they connect to  .I can dig into that a little further if that becomes a question as I think I have 3 examples on varius saws .

I was hoping to find out what happened. But was told leave it as is for now.

Like to open it up for a look inside.

They're pretty tough .I have a mag I replaced the piston in some time ago for trimmer bud .It had literally  grenaded the piston .Didn't hurt the cylinder .He got another 8 or so years out of it before he gave it to me .
I think the mag,mag II was the more popular of that series. As such plenty of used parts .The AV or the Super you don't see as many these days .
