Stihl 038 bing carb
« on: September 06, 2014, 11:44:01 am »
Hi All,
I have a 038 Magnum II that has a Bing Carb on it , Bought it new , sold it many years ago  as I hated the way it ran rich when turned on it's side to fell a tree .
Recently it was given back to me and  it still has the same issues.
Is there a different carb  that could be retrofitted with minor work for this saw ? Maybe a Zama, Tillotson,or Walbro  from another saw ?
 Thanks,
Duhnis

A Tillotson HK42B used on the 038 AV is a perfect match .However the Bing seems to be a better carb .Oregon makes the rebuild kits for the Bing BTW .

While on the subject a heads up .The weak link on any model of the 038 is the fact it's very easy to tear the carb boot .
It comes apart on the underside of the carb where you cannot see it without removing it .

The anti vib system has enough movement it can stress the boot usually from a faulty AV mount on the left upper side of the carb looking forward .I've replaced several as well as boots .

One issue I had with a Bing kit on an old 038 back @2002, I talked the customer into buying the new 50+ carb kit, and from Stihl it comes in a plastic snap/case.   I pulled my hair out over this bugger, until I compared the circuit plate gaskets, they were totally different and was the
problem all along.  I called the dist. and raised holy hell.  So since then I am real skeptical of any carb kit that is not sealed....
I ended up using the old gasket in a $50 kit, and yes, they are great carbs!!!!!!!

Thank You all for the replies,
Yes, The upper AV mount screw was loose and the saw has a lean condition at idle and low speed ( torn Boot).
Since day one, The  saw will run pretty good when bucking firewood in the upright position , but when turned over onto it's side , It will run burbling rich . A couple of dealers looked at it back then and never cured it.
Was this a common problem for the 038 magnum II's or just mine?
For a 72 cc saw , I thought it should have cut better, It won't keep up the 70 cc 044, which I bought to replace it.  I have both saws now, along with a 066, 064 ( My favorite), a 011,a 056,a056 super and a 056 magnum II .

I plan on stripping the saw down and having the dealer install engine seals due to the age,  But does anyone
have any performance tips as to make this saw really run ?

 Thanks again everyone,
 Duhnis

The 038 Mag I have and the ones I have seen all have dual port mufflers. I opened mine up a little (cough - cough) and re-tuned it. Made a small difference in that she holds rpm in the cut better. After the MM to the 038 Mag, my 044 (in stock trim) could still hold slightly more rpm in the cut with a 24" B&C ....

Throw on a 28" B&C and they were even, except the 044 was more smoothe. 044 with a MM was ahead on all fronts. I ported each one and the 038 has gobs of low end grunt while the 044 has gobs of power up high. I cured that by running a 7 pin on the 044 and an 8 pin on the 038 Mag when running 28" and under. When I go 32" - its 7 pin all around.

Seals are relatively easy to change on that saw .As far as tuning short of reworking (porting )the best I can say is gut the muffler .No baffle cage ,no deflecters ,no screen .Retune the saw so it "4 cycles " and get with it .

That's a good ole saw .Probabley the last of the heavy framed made which include the 028,042 ,048 plus three 038 .038 av ,038 super and 038 mag which became the 380 .
