Stihl 044
« on: September 12, 2014, 11:12:13 pm »
Older Stihl 044 having idling/jetting problems. Saw will start and run up but wont respond to jetting really at all.  New, withing the last two years, 52mm jug and piston.  Replaced intake boot, impulse hose, and a carb kit ( Zama C3M).  Still no change.  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Are there limiters on this carb? Most 044/046 had walbros HD series carbs on them.

Plastic stops that limit the amount you can adjust the H and L needles.

I dont believe so, cant see any.  Im thinking either the carb is toast, which I have heard these eventually wear out, or it has a air leack in the crank case.

If it's not responding to changes at all in the needles then you've got a fuel problem. Even an air leak can be tuned out depending on how big it is.

Let me correct my self, it will respond to the L jetting some, but will not respond to idle jetting at all.  Any idea what the small tube coming from the top of the fuel tank is?  Its about 2" long, has a spring inside and a small plastic fitting in one end with a screw in it.

it will respond to the L jetting some, but will not respond to idle jetting at all.

Is this a typo?  The L jet is the idle jet.
