Stihl 044 issues.
« on: July 11, 2013, 07:53:19 pm »
Greetings. I have read everything I can find on 044 repairs, carb issues and adjustments. I could use some expert advice. I was cutting as usual on 20"+ fresh cut oak. I finished a cut and my rpm's went up to about 1/4 throttle. I thought my air filter was dirty so I cleaned it and then the saw was difficult to start and would bog when I tried to give it gas and it would kill. I have worked on these saws in the past so the 1st thing I did was order a carb kit and installed it and it made no difference. It doesn't matter where I set the Low/High screws it still is hard to start and bogs when I give it gas and it kills. Do I have seal issues maybe?   ???    Thanks.

I would be looking at the fuel line, impulse path, and the carb intake boot to be split underneath.

Seals on the bearings and cylinder gasket can cause this too.

I was thinking of check cheap first k.i.s.s. .

Fuel line for webbed cracks,
Impulse line for cracks,
Tank vent clogged,
checked fuel filter
boot
Then seals.

Cut4fun and I were talking about the 440 last night

On the 044, the carb is mounted on the tank/handle and if you pull on the handle much it will flex the intake boot enough to eventually tear it.

Unreal..3 replies and I am now armed with options. I have done a complete strip down of my 039 due to crushed case so I'm on it.
What a great site. I know on another site I would have been kicked to the curb on this question.

Thanks !

I just had 3 that the cyl. screws were loose.  Esp. the right front.  On one they were so loose it broke the right front corner off the cyl.  Did the same as you kitted the carb. same thing hard to start, when it did would run a little and shut off.

I think that loose cylinder bolts are often overlooked, and a quick easy fix. Have had a couple 346 with loose bolts.

Wow...All the above.. Cyll took 1/8th turn on all corners, I had a small crack in the intake boot, Fuel line was kinked and only able to deliver half the fuel.( may not have mattered ) Impulse line fell apart in my hands while trying to remove it. Replaced all, carb kit and a 3/8 Skip Tooth...The 044 beast has never ran better. And here I thought I knew everything..Thank You Everyone.
