I can't say I've heard of Rural King, so I wouldn't consider it a box store. Lowes, Home Depot,  Walmart, those I would consider box stores, however similar to the others some may be. TSC, maybe?

Stihl is not in box stores here yet (Canada). Some independant Home Hardware stores sell them but the dealership is in the owners name. Echo does the same. If the store goes back corporate, then the saw dealership cannot stay with the store. Some China made product is here also. We see Chinese FS38 trimmers on a regular basis.

What about territory? There are 3 Stihl dealers in town. The John Deere dealership, Southern States Coop, and an independent dealer that also sells Toro. The Coop and independent dealer are half a block away. Is there a point at which Stihl says enough in terms of the number of dealers in a city? 50k in town 100kish in county.

The two Husqvarna dealers are 2 blocks away from each other.

Interesting how they advertise their prices.  Looks like a tester to see what kind of feedback they get.

It is this way in my area too. There are 7 Stihl dealers within 20 mi of my house. I have a choice of 3 within 5 mi of the house. Only one of the 20 carries any parts inventory to speak of. However, the dealer up the street (a half mile away) is good about parts ordering. The prices are good and the delivery is two days. His business is almost 100 percent home use Stihl items.

The local Echo and Dolmar dealer gets his parts the next day as the distributor is only 60 mi from his house.

The Husqvarna guy takes about 4 days.

Reminds you of the old days when there was a gasoline service station on every corner - later - a bank branch on every corner - then - A pharmacy - soon - A Stihl Dealer on every corner.

Just because a chain store like Ace or Southern States sells Stihl at one or two locations, doesn't mean that they have a deal
with the chain itself.  The closest that they have come is this huge deal with John Deere, which is a huge mistake on their part.  The ones down here, if you need to buy a saw, you have to wait until the Deere parts guys get rid of all of their parts
customers, the Deere salesmen stay at their desks reading their newspapers....

Last time I had to buy one of my E-bay units there, I interrupted the parts guy, and asked for the warranty form to fill out
myself, and let him scan my paypal quickly, as I had already stood there 1/2 of an hour.  My regular Stihl guy was out of
what I needed that day....

The second closest Stihl dealer to my house is a Deere dealer and I've noticed what you are talking about. Lucky there's another half dozen Stihl dealers within range.
