All right, the saw was sold and mailed(it ran fine for me while I had it).
New owner says the saw will not run when laid up for felling trees, but runs fine while bucking....

Never having dealt with anything such as this, where do I try to help him find a fix?

(I have absolutely no idea what he has done to it, if anything)

What did you have to do to the saw to get it running? May very well be an air leak.

There is the problem....the saw was running just fine when I received it, cut fine in every way I could think to hold it.
I did some felling with it, as well as bucking and I even noodled a few pieces.

I was running 40:1 premium gas w/out ethanol
New fuel filter, fuel line, air filter and plug....I ran these items for a short while.  Then dumped the fuel out and ran the saw dry, drained the bar oil, and then shipped.

Well, that is a tough one. Could possibly be that the fuel filter is hanging up inside the tank, I have seen this happen when the fuel filter is not heavy enough to fall to the bottom of the tank starving the saw of fuel. Some of the AM filters for Stihl look like OEM but do not weigh the same.

That is a tough one.

Like killians stated could be the filter.   Have them try it with a full tank of fuel.
Pull the starter cover off and check the wiring to make sure when the saw is on its side nothing is shorting.
Get a flash light and check the rubber intake boot carefully.
Pressure test with saw sitting on its side.

The bottom line is that something is changing when the saw is put on its side.

Does the saw instantly die or does it try to run and then eventually die.

If it dies instantly I would think ignition problem.

If it tries to run and then dies I would think fuel problem or air leak.

One more thing.
Does the 056 use an impulse line or does the impulse go through the carb gasket and intake.

If impulse line then that is one more thing to check with a flashlight.

+1 Roger, good thoughts! Just did an 051 and can't for the life of me remember what it used for the impulse!

Cool, I will send those ideas towards this fella.

If he isn't inclined enough to these things, I'm guessing maybe he might need to find a 'dealer' to go through it.

I bought a chainsaw from a person on here that had been completely gone through. After I got it home, it wouldn't run high speed. Looked under the cover and the impulse line had kinked over the winter. I cut about a half inch from the impulse line and got the kink out and it runs perfect.

660Magnum does the 056 use an impulse line?
