stihl 066 old girl ignition problems
« on: September 25, 2014, 04:29:03 am »
Hi guys,I have an old 066 which ran the aluminium flywheel (1122 400 1204)running on the small diameter crank (M8 nut) plus the old rectangular German CDIC 106/1 ignition coil, and the old coil died, got an old red eye replacement which didn't work, Stuck for ideas as Stihl want over $300 for a new replacement coil. Tried the  generic coil from Ebay, cord jerked out of my hand so hard I nearly added 2 inches to my arm length! I have an old twin key-way flywheel part: In P position - 400 1209, in x position- 400 1214. yet still no joy. Any suggestions? Regards Richard

You need a 1122 400 1201 or 1122 400 1203 flywheel to run the universal ignition module. The are a few on eBay for 30 dollars or so.

the x slot should work based on the part number correlation to the universal ignition module.

Thanks for that. So the position of the keyway in the crank itself must be similar from one 066 to another? If not, then it could become very tricky. I will give it a go with one of the flywheels you suggest and see how it goes. Regards Richard

Yes the key way in the crankshaft should be in the same location on all 066. Let us know how you make out with it.

the x slot should work based on the part number correlation to the universal ignition module.

I missed spoke on this. The two slot flywheel will not work with the universal ignition module. You need to have the 1201 or 1203 flywheel. Also flywheels listed above fit an 064 witch are a skinnier flywheel than the 066 so you may need to get a recoil housing for a 064 to make those flywheels work. I am not 100% sure that those flywheels are a direct swap for your recoil housing.

Attached is a technical training memo from Stihl concerning 064-066 ignitions.  Hopefully the part numbers will help you come up with a combination that will work and not cost as much as you were quoted.

OK, this chart is interesting, it looks like I need to go the 1122 400 1311 coil, along with the 1122 400 1204 flywheel, and the WJ48 carburettor as well to bring it up to specs according to the sheet. Wow! alternatively, I have found a new, old stock CDIC 106/1A coil for $50 I could fit to my original 1122 400 1204 flywheel, but I wonder if its been sitting not in use, if it would be ok, or do they degenerate with time even if not used?

Not something that degrades while sitting.   Adam
