Stihl 066 won’t start
« on: March 16, 2018, 10:30:57 am »
First I will say I am not a chainsaw repair person, but my local Stihl dealer is backed up about 3 weeks and I need to get this thing up and going again.

So here is what is going on.  The chainsaw just had the trigger/choke buttons replaced with a newer setup from the dealer due to my choke hanging and causing the saw to be difficult to cut off.  They checked it out before that and said it had great compression and the saw when running sounds great.  However, I started cutting with it after I got it back and it started getting hot.  I turned it off when I noticed and started cutting again and the saw started to Bog down and then cut off.  I took it to a small engine repair that said it wasn’t getting spark and he replaced the spark plug, air filter and then the coil.  Now when he tests it shows it has spark but we can’t get the chainsaw to crank still.  He said he even tried starting fluid and still wouldn’t start.  He says it still has good compression.  What would I need to check next?  I am not confident with this guy and can’t wait 3 weeks to get it going again.

What are your ideas?

For one he should have not been trying starting fluid on a 2 stroke. Use mix in a squirt bottle.

Start checking things.

Pull muffler and look the piston rings over.
Check impulse line, check fuel line and filter.

Check the on/off switch area to make sure not off and grounding out.

Some for starters.

Thanks, I will start checking those out today.  Air Filter is new, and pulled muffler, there is no screen on this one that I seen and piston looks clean and moves when pulled.  But I will take a pic to show the area when I get home.  I haven’t pulled the carb to see if it is clogged, but not sure if I have to replace seals even though I seen videos that make it look moderately doable.

Also I would pull the plug to see if it is wet or dry.

Pull the plug and set it on top of the cylinder sideways put the plug wire on it and then give the rope a good pull.   Look and see if you have a spark on the plug.

Let us know what you find.

Ok, I have verified spark.  Checked fuel filter, looked at piston head and it moves freely but does have some scratching.  The scratched don’t seem to cause restriction. Air filter is brand new and so is spark plug.

I wonder about the repair person I took it to.  He said he adjust the carb before the replacement of the coil.  He only replaced the coil because I asked if it had spark and told him my suspicions when it just cut off after getting a little hot.  So I also wonder about the coil install as well.  I have attached several pics with what I have seen.

Let me know what y’all think.
